A head casting question

For all of the head casters out there: can I make a mold of a head that's already been painted (with acrylics) and sealed (with water based matte varnish)? Will the mold process harm the paint and/or sealant?

It depends on what materials you use. I use Smooth-On's OOMO line and have casted painted heads several time just as you describe with no harm to the paint job.

I use Alumilite products, so I'm not sure if I'd have the same success as you.

I should probably mention that the painted head is resin, not vinyl.

I cast 3 painted heads ( 2 resin, 1 vinyl ) a while ago using Smooth-On Vytaflex 20. They hadn't been sealed but i didn't have any problems with them.

Hmmmm....

You shouldn't have a problem. Especially if you've varnished them. You MIGHT notice a muting of detail; the paint and varnish add layers over the sculpted bits. Although if you've used acrylics it's probably not gonna be really noticable.
