    Need some advice

    Hi,

I want to clean up an some old toys. To be specific, two old action jacksons and a GI Joe adventure team truck. What's the best way to clean them? There is just some old dirt and grime (no marker stains, etc)?

I am just worried about discoloring them. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Hello JMC.

I am not a 'pro restorer' by any stretch, but I always like toothbrushes and a mild dish soap solution. If there are no metal parts, stickers, electronics, etc. it's so much easier - everyone into the sink!!

(I know that chlorine bleach is a no-no in most cases, but I always add just a few drops to the water for plastics ever since I took the housing off one of my Atari 7800s (GoodWill) and there were dead ROACHES and chip crumbs inside!! - this is why with everything that we get from other sources it's 'SilkWood' the second they reach my doorstep!! )

    Good luck, be careful -

      ^^ yup, what he said.

I use dish detergent diluted in warm water. It won't hurt the AJ at all - use a soft toothbrush or a small rag. Same thing for the truck. If it has stickers on it, be careful about getting them wet.

Denture tablets. Best thing especially for heads. Really gets the crap out of the eyes and nooks and crannies. You can get them a Dollar Tree or Wal Mart. If you still need to scrub after that, what Derek said is what I've found to be the next step. Wax and some glues can be easily removed by freezing the piece. It gets brittle and chips right off. WD-40 will remove sticker residue from plastic. Not for cloth it will stain. While I've never used it DaveMc says Remove-zit from Twin Pines of Maine Co. http://www.twinpines.com will remove marker and mold stains from vinyl heads and bodies. The front page of the site actually shows a half and half of a GI Joe head as an example that's pretty impressive.
It's not a doll it's an action figure.

I always use a little bit of toothpaste on heads. I recently acquired an AJ head that was pretty grubby. I gave it a light brush with toothpaste and it came up a treat!

Then a bit of silk matt black acrylic paint on the head rubs and it looks like new....smells minty fresh too.

No danger now of A.J. getting gingivitis, eh?

My wife uses a flavorless toothpaste on some of her rings and other jewelery, so why not?

            Take care -
