    Fixing a frayed cape?

    Hi guys,

Long time lurker, first time poster. Just wondering if this is possible? I got a Mego Superman that is in very good
condition, except that the cape is frayed a little. Is it possible to fix this? If I cut along
the edge carefully with scissors, would that do the trick?

Thanks and I appreciate any help/tips anyone may share.

If the fray is minimal, and you trim it carefully, you'll have a cape that looks as good as new. Just make sure that if you sell it to anyone, you tell the buyer that it's been trimmed. I've trimmed several of mine, with pretty good results. I know a lot of people don't like this, but I usually put a tiny bit of Fray-check around the edges after it's trimmed.

The most important consideration is using razor sharp scissors...

Yep, fray-check is essential. Once those things start fraying, they never seem to stop. As Del said..use a TINY BIT... be carefull when you apply it, if you get too much on there it will stain the cape.

You should definitely practice with the Fray-check on an old piece of material before using it on vintage capes. And don't bother holding the bottle top-down - you'll get way too much. It's better if you kind of tip it to the side. It also helps when some of the liquid dries over the opening and you just use a pin to open it, instead of peeling it off. Not as much will come out at once.

Thanks a lot for all the great tips, guys!

The cape is just slightly fraying. I guess I was surprised because this was a carded figure that I opened and being new to collecting Megos (loved them as a kid, of course) I never expected the cape be frayed. I assumed that came from playing with them.

Does the Fray Check change the feel of the cape in any way?
