Our Custom Flash, etc.....what to do now?

With Mattel releasing our dream wish list of Flash and Lex Luthor, etc. it has me wondering what everyone is doing with their old customs of these characters?

I gave my custom Green Lantern to my nephew. My custom Lex is in a box with my old Mego's for my kids to play with and I'm destroying my custom Flash to use his yellow boots and red suit for future projects.

I have no intentions of keeping a custom once I buy the real thing (and switch 'em to mego bodies).

What is everyone else doing with their customs?

..I've noticed alot of custom dumping on ebay lately. I'm sure it has alot to do with the Retro figures.

I know so many of you folks here are true artisans when it comes to figures and there are many examples that surpass what can be produced as a mass market ReMego. I first bought all my custom parts and accessories years ago because I wanted to make the Megos that I never had as a kid.

I don't think my skill set is good enough to make something as professional as Mattel or Emce, but it's ironic that I caught the custom bug again just as they make these new releases and announcement.

They literally just announced Guy Gardner as I am finishing mine up. I honestly never thought that he'd make the list of retro figures, and this early to boot. So I'm rushing to finish all my DC figures now and I'm suspecting that I'll be a bit more hesitant to start on another DC character.

Of the figures announced and released, my Lex has the classic Gene Hackman 12" head shrunk down to 8" so it still holds some nostalgic fondness.

I'll give my niece my Barry style Flash, and keep plugging away on my Wally Flash.

I switched my plans for a Hal Jordan Green Lantern into a classic John Stewart. If they do release a John Stewart, I'm sure it will be fine because I would assume Matty would release the contemporary Stewart outfit and not the Hal-style one John wears when he replaced Hal in the eighties. I have a few extra GL outfits, probably throw one on a spare Sinestro when I find one for cheap. Probably do an Abin Sur as well since there are plenty of bald heads available to paint red.

I like my CC Beck style Captain Marvel head with squinty eyes and BLiet suit with sash, so I'll be hanging onto that one, but I won't move forward with my plans for a Black Adam and the rest of the Marvel Family. Probably do the Marvelman family instead.

So are folks now a bit more reluctant to start on a DC character custom? Particularly if a character like Guy Gardner has shown up so early on?

Or does that present a challenge of finding more obscure and creative figures to do?

Artist based depictions of characters, like capturing the look of artwork by Alex Ross or Neal Adams? Elseworld's versions like Kingdom Come or Dark Knight?

Characters that Mattel would have to be nuts to do... like Brother Power or Prez?

Unless Mattel makes them EXACTLY like my customs I'm keeping mine

All you need to do is look at the customs section and see how many Supermans or Batmans have been made. And MEGO made Supermans and Batmans.

So who cares what Mattel makes? If you want to make a custom of a figure you do so. The end.

I'm keeping my custom Flash, Shazam, Sinestro, Martian Manhunter, etc. for sentimental reasons, and also because some of the parts used were authentic Mego parts. I'm collecting the DC Retro characters as well, but they're staying on the card for now.

I've been making more Marvel than DC customs lately anyway, as well as other stuff outside of comics (Fourth Dr. Who and possibly a shot at some Mego-esque Star Wars figures), so the Retro figures just point me in a different direction for custom inspiration.

No signed paper can hold the iron. It must come from men. The words of Ten Bears carries the same iron of life and death. It is good that warriors such as we meet in the struggle of life... or death. It shall be life."

I'm keeping mine. No desire to move them along. Shoot, half are not even finished yet. But I can see people doing more Marvel customs in the future.

Collecting customs is what helps define my collection. After all, anyone can purchase a mego on Ebay or a retro from Toys'rUs, but not everyone has a Shocker custom from Type3Toys or a Blackknight from the Blackknight. My customs definitely stay put no matter what Mattel or anyone else produces.

To me the customs are on the same level of the original megos. They are classic and deserve their place with the original line of WGSH. The new RA are cool but no new retro will ever replace an original or a custom.

^ I agree. Some customs are fantastic works of art and I would rather them any day to some mass produced thing. My Cheetah being a classic example.

My customs go in the display case, the mattels hang outside it like ugly people in line at the hottest club in town! They won't get around to the characters i've made for years if ever except for JLA/ superfriends and i'll still keep mine. Really how many of the 70's Teen Titans or Members of the All-Star Squadron do you think they'll make anytime soon?
