    Robotman custom opinions needed

Ok i'm working my way thru thr 40's JSA and i've branched out into the 7 Soldiers of Victory (all 8 of them) and thanks to Roy Thomas ( because i love his writing and who he included, i never met him) the All-Star Squadron. so i was looking at the core characters of the Squadron and Robotman is one of them, there's also the Doom Patrol Robotman i could try the same trick to and here is where i want opinions.

Squadron one is Gun metal blue -grey and DP one is copper but both look basically like a nude Mego body with a custom head needed.

So should i just paint a nude T-2 or Doc body the right color and pop a a head and say it's done or do i really need to come up with a cloth outfit of the right color and some kind of joints drawn on it for it to be an acceptable Mego Custom?

Sorry i can't post photo's, but if anyone else can and would i'd appreciate it

    Let's hear it customizers!!!!

It depends on just how strict you are about the Megolike style. If Mego had made Robotman at their height, I think they would have made him somewhat like Iron Man. I'm not familiar with the Squadron version of Robotman though, so my opinion might change once I have a chance to look him up. However, you might want to think of it this way - If they had lasted long enough to make him, it would have been after several style upgrades - Look at the difference between Mego Spidey and Conan. So maybe the company would have come up with better ways to portray armor and robotics if they had continued making 8" figures. I still like the idea of Robotman having a removeable suit, but maybe there would be some plastic snap-on pieces or something. Even if you do the painted body, I think he'll be recognizeable if you get the headsculpt in the right style.

Brian Leitner sells metallic shiny suits. I've seen silver and gold suit from him, and they look fantastic. I bought a gold one for a custom I have yet to complete. Spray painting a body makes the figure look too skinny imho.

            Hmmmm....

I'd modify a body (since a lot of artists have drawn him with seams and rivets) and paint it.

It would be a silkscreen, hard-angled face like Iron Man, boots and either dyed hands or IM-type gloves.

There's really no logic flow behind exposed/unexposed skin for WGSH other than manufacturing cost.

I always find spray-painted bodies kinda dull. I mean, maybe, if you sculpted the hell out of it and then painted it. Still I think it would be cooler with a metallic suit or even a non-metallic gray or orange.

Yeah i bought a gold one and my Shining Knight aka Sir Justin is done and looking pretty good. it just seems that the basic body looks like the body of the characters with exception of at the joints. i wish someone could post images for me.

It's a Tarzan vs Conan thing. I used to not like the exposed Conan but the gear and head make up for it.

Plus I don't think Robotman has as many cool acessories.

It would be fun to find out what the budget of a figure would be according to Mego. I know theres a hundred different other factor . I know of some video game collectors/programers who still make thier own Atari 2600 games but only with the memory limitations that the originals had.

Could make customizing more fun if we had budget "limits" some times .

My favorite Robotman is teh old comic strip. Was NOTHING like teh 1980s stuffed toys or Cartoon. I still remeber the cops raiding an " Alien " convention and putting Robotman , Spock, and ET in jail. Spock carves a Phaser out of a Bar of soap and tries to bluff thier way out. Funny stuff !

This version of Robotman is my favourite.

The best thing about this one is that you don't have to worry about the robot body (maybe the arms if you go the sleeveless jacket route). Stick him in a jacket, some pants and boots.

                            All-Star Squadron linked image:

and JSA style linked image from the DC line:

Personally I say body suit, with Ironman sytle neck and shoulder fabric for the JSA style one. The ALS version would probably benefit from a screened or dfp suit with repro knight boots. What would be really cool would be to make slush molded DM style gloves that extend up past the back of the elbow and boots up to the front of the knee, to mold in those joints.

As far as nude colored body superheroes... I disagree with the entire idea. Even Tarzan and GA had flesh suit and sleeves. Or - to put it another way:
How many of these characters would follow the same spray painted logic?

Makes it just as reasonable to spray paint Moon Knight and Superman, IMO.

                              Interesting conundrum here.

As you can see, the original Robotman in those drawings was pretty simple. That gold colored figure is actually the Doom Patrol Robotman...different guy. This is what he looked like before they messed him up with jackets and clunky boots and such.

I would sculpt the knee and elbow joint armor directly on the body in such a way it doesnt affect joint mobility, and then paint the body silver. How...without screwing up joint mobility? Take a look at the knee guards on the Mego knight boots...and use a similar approach. The figure will not look the best from the back, but from the front, he will look fine.

You could even get fancy and use chrome paint for that new robot shine.
