How do I remove the badge to make a chauffers hat?

I bought a Doc Megos black police hat and I want to turn it into a chauffers hat for a Kato figure.I would like to know what is the best way to do this?The police badge is molded into the hat and I'm not sure how to take it off without ruining it.If anybody has done this before or knows a good way to do it,let me know.

If it's plyable I would use an exacto and shave/slice it off carefully, if it's brittle/hard I would use a sanding drum on a dremmel and then use a fine grt to blend it in, then paint. If it's still to rough or gosh forbid you go through and make a whole, just cover it with Milliput or Aves epoxyputty and smooth it out.
