How about instead of soaking in acetone make a plaster mold use aliginate. When it shrinks cast it again. See what that does. I
I WISH I had been able to find out but everything I did for work was actual size.
I asked a Teacher later in school they told me about the Alginate thing .
Whats this I hear people use pressure pots for?Comment

^^Dental Alginate is a high water concentration mold material which "shrinks" because the water begins evaporating significantly (generally you need to get all your hard casting done before 2 hrs or so elapse - the faster the better). I've used it for prosthetic make up molds but never really charted how uniformly it shrank before... I would imagine it would deform quite a lot though, since it's an evaporation action - all smaller outlying pieces more heavily exposed to air would shrink much more quickly. I would think you'd have super tiny ears, nose, etc.
Anyone have any experience there?
Pressure pots are used to condense any vapor content in a casting material. Basically they crush any air bubbles in your mix until they almost disappear, making the finished cast denser, with a better "skin." I've never heard of them being used for rescaling the size of a cast before - can't rightly say I'd know what function they'd serve there if any.
[EDIT]
If you're just looking at reduction options for casting there's a material called Reducit (and I think they have an alternate called Expandit or something) which was specifically designed to shrink without deformation over multiple castings... There's technical info at The Compleat Sculptor here.Last edited by Tothiro; Apr 10, '10, 2:43 AM.Comment

I used and have the hobby alginate. Used it to make plaster head reproductions. I let the alginate dry out and boil it for re use. It shivels distorts and withers as it drys. Thats just the molds.Comment
