    Question about dying plastic

I've seen people dye plastic parts, with varying degrees of success. Has anyone dyed a vintage body? I'm attempting to do just the lower legs, and was wondering if anyone has done this, and if so, how long should I keep it in the dye? I'll post how well(if at all) mine worked when it's done, or when I give up.
Hey! Where's the waiter with the water for my daughter?

    Del,

I've found that using art markers with a xylene base, you can color a flesh tone vintage mego body. It's actually more of a tint really, because the color isn't very opaque, but sy if you wanted to give a green or blue tint or hue to a flesh colored body, prismacolor or design markers (at least when I was doing it) would work better than the dye for me personally... I'd say try a test on a body or part you don't care about.

The flesh colored bodies are pretty dark when dyed. Some of the plastic does not take dye evenly as well. Docs white bodies are pretty good for taking dye.

I don't think I'm going to have much luck. I was trying to dye a lower leg black, but it didn't do much at all. Maybe if I gave the surface of the plastic a light sanding, it might be able to take a little more of the coloring.

Vinyl heads dye well, don't they?

the heads will definitely suck up the dye. I am not so sure how colorfast RIT dye is tho. I have done several experiments with customs over the years and many of my dye items have faded on the softer plastics. Worth noting that the dye does not effect painted areas, so if it starts to fade, you can pop the head off and hit it with the dye again.

Why dye a lower leg black? They made one for the Cheron. Wouldn't one of those work for you?

I know that Cheron has one black hand and one white, but I was under the impression that the rest of his body was just a regular body, with the suit and boots to provide the coloring. I don't know for sure, because I've never owned Cheron. Also, if they did make his legs to match his color scheme, then wouldn't there only be one black leg? I need two - I only tried dye one to see if it would work and not damage the plastic.

His body is completely black except for the one white hand...

yep, Cherons body is completely black.

But.... He also has the issue of letting off whatever it is that makes the Cheron suits turn orange and brown. You might not want to invite that into your custom. Once again, tho. Doc has the repro Cheron which is also on a black body and, as far as I know, does not have the coloring problem with the cloth goods.
