    sculpting tools

    So;

    I ordered a set of these, and they're very nice:

    4pc Pro Sculptors Sculpting Tools, Aurora Revell Resin - eBay (item 250584732430 end time Mar-23-10 09:43:11 PDT)

    I was kinda worried they'd get stopped at the border, since they kinda look like lockpicks; but they arrived the other day.

      Those look great. I have tools that are similar as well... Dental tools work well, too. Personally, I the use metal tools on resin or cured/semi-cured epoxy. But they can be really hard on clay, especially at the scale we work in. I find that wooden tools, with finely rounded edges and points, work far better on clays, than metal tools do. They allow much more "give" on the surface of the material and provide much more finesse. They're also lighter and more ergonomic to shape of your hand. When sculpting for hours at a clip, you'll notice a big difference.

        I work mostly on epoxies, so I'm okay with that. I have a set of wooden ones too and tend to use both on the same project. For different effects. I'm kinda hamfisted as well, so the heavier tools feel better to me.

            Yeah, I agree - they're a nice set. Definitely cheaper than most art supply stores.

            I like a combination of both steel and wood tools depending on what I'm doing as well. I also find an acrylic rub-out tool (used for re-working/erasing acrylic paints on canvas) really useful for polymer clays. They're rubber wedge/cone tipped, and great for softer hair lines. It's like working with wood tools but they have more give - though they need to be replaced regularly since the rubber tips wear out.

              I have used a variety of tools but mostly have worked in sculpey. Tho I must caution you I have not ever offered anything I sculpted for sale. I don't think I have reached the level yet where I can sell what I sculpt. It's still pretty rough stuff.

              For instance these are really great tools:

              These are called Clay Shapers. They have rubber tips and are also used in painting.

                These were mine until I upgraded to the $7 wooden tool pack at Joanne's. I have the clay shapers as well but I don't really like it for Super Sculpey. At the moment my favorite sculpting tools of choice is the exacto knife and a wooden butter-knife shaped tool that came with the wooden tool pack. I like how I can constantly sharpen the edge with fine grit sandpaper or the exacto knife. Depends on how really lazy I am to get up from the worktable.

                I must admit that I did purchase the tool set you posted and really want to use them but I am busy with something else so sculpting has to sit on the back burner.
