    Fabric Suggestions...

About to embark on my first suit and was wondering what is the closest polyester available for a superhero suit?

    Hmmmm....

Old T-shirts. Go to Goodwill or St. Vincent dePaul and get some.

Not to step on feet, but I'd advise staying away from old tee-shirts. They come in any color you may want but cotton stretches out and gets baggy. I've used jet set for most of my work. It's the closest thing I've found to what mego used in their later years. Whatever you use, just have fun doing it.

I'm slowly switching over to a cotton lycra blend that stretches like spandex, but has a more oldschool non shiny look to it.

That's the kind of stuff I always look for, especially if I can find something that's a little thicker than spandex. I had some yellow spandex, and when I made a suit with it, the thing was nearly see-through.
I have had some success with buying warm-up type outfits at the Goodwill. Some of them have the same texture as Mego fabric. I got a red one once that has yielded me a lot of suits. I'm not looking forward to the day I run out and need a substitute.
