USUALLY acrylics. They're thinner and don't obscure detail. Plus, they're easier to work with if you want to get all fancy with the washes and drybrushing. But they're very fragile, and you HAVE to seal them with some kind of varnish afterwards.
I've used enamels on some stuff. It's not good for stuff with a lot of fine detail, but for simpler casts it'll work.
I like acrylics and then sprayed lightly with clear matte acrylic sealer.

Best of all ... the results are nice.
Enamel is better for painting stuff like model cars, airplanes and ships, imo
