    Tribute Thread for McDunsel

    The McDunsel Era

I can't think of any other title to better describe the time James Brady and Dave McCormick favoured us with their presents and customs.

It was a fun fresh time.
A time to be alive and a Star Trek Mego fan.

At a time when most customs were made by repainting Mego heads and reusing existing suits, James and Dave sculpted and sewn them from scratch --- and they were FANTASTIC !!!

I won James' first contest EVER .....
My prize was a hand sculpted, hand painted cast of James first true offical custom -- KAHN !!!
I was told this was the first custom to come out of the mould.

James suggested I have a suit made for him by a new guy to Mego Museum.
    His name was Dave McCormack.
On James' word, I readily contacted Dave.

Junkie web-cam photo below is Kahn sitting in Priority Box chair #1.A waiting for the arrival of his new clothes (i'm guessing from '02 or '03)

The McDunsel Era brings back a lot of good memories for me.

For newer members (especially Trek fans) let me tell you, it was a golden age.
But, you still can enjoy a peice of that time even though you weren't here.
Today, we can appeciate what they've done through Doctor Mego's releases .. So the adventure still does continue.

    Thanks guys

    I concur Mike.

Prior to hydrospan, a head from this person, suit from this person, paint from this person, accessories from this person assemble and call it your own customs. Truly hand crafted, mego inspired customs, laying the foundation for many things to come from two very talented individuals who also happen to be some of the coolest people you can ever have a chat with.

Signing in and seeing what James and/or Dave (and not to hijack but worth mentioning Cory) had done next. Seeing them constantly improve their skills with each outing. Good times indeed. Not that the nowdays are bad but those days do seem extra special.

I remember there was a short period of time just before the McDunsel era. There was a newbie who had joined. Seemed like a good guy. Asked if anybody had any ideas for how to make casts of original sculpts. I had maybe 3 months of experience in the resins myself. So I typed the few ideas I had and the methods I used and sent them onto him. They still exist, those few notes...Greatly expanded and edited into something called Proper English on Dunsel's website. I feel like the guy who painted DaVinci's lving room and explained the difference between Satin finish and Glossy finish.

Bill's skill and knowledge goes largely under the radar.

I agree, James was a huge inspiration AND help to me getting started in the hobby. I look at his stuff on his site even now and I'm in aww of the work those two did.

I have a crappy memory for much of the early museum days, probably due to malt liquor but one post sticks in my mind. This relatively new guy posting he had made child hood customs and that he picked up a coffee creamer and was planning to remake a childhood custom of the Wizard.

I had low expectations and was completely blown away as a result, the guy was gifted!

I miss the McDunsel era, it was a lot of fun and it so full of a cool energy, the customs weren't meant to be resold and I always loved that.

Still have my Yvonne Craig Orion Slave girl.

Wow. A tribute thread. We're not dead ya know!

                        Thanks for the kind words.

James is busy being a new Dad, but still busts out the clay now and again, as is evident with his work on the new Khan, Sulu and Chekov from EMCE. I've seen some other projects he's done as well. He just get's better and better.

When I "met" him, he had just done Khan and I had to have it. Making that first Khan suit got me started into customizing. I still have it somewhere. Man, it looks TERRIBLE. But he wanted one. Eventually he let me in on the planning of his next sculpts, so I could dress them ahead of time. It was the most fun I've had customizing. James is simply one of the classiest people on the planet.

Actually, Wave 3 was never finished. Each wave of figures was supposed to have 5, but wave three has only 4. James always insisted that one day number 5 would happen. We even settled on the character, then switched and settled on another, then switched.... well, you get the idea. When he's ready, I'll certainly be on board with him if he needs me.

Why doesn't he come here anymore? His work is superior and I bet 30 years ago he could have worked for mego.

I came in at the tail-end of the McDunsel era (although maybe it's not over yet, just lying dormant, if that 5th figure for Wave 3 shows! ) but I recall being amazed at Trelane and Gary Seven and Roberta Lincoln. Wish I'd have bought them!

Without a doubt, the work of these two gents not only solidified my interest in customs but really anchored me here. I came by every day hoping to find something new from the creative team of McDunsel Inc. Just looking was good enough for me - when I was lucky enough to win a Trelane through James' trivia contest - I was beside myself happy. I would love to see a resurgence but also understand life happens.

Thanks for stirring up some happy memories, Mike!
