Customizing a Mego Romulan, Requesting Help

I finally have a bit of a break, so I decided I'd like to finally get around to customizing a Romulan Commander from the standard Emce Romulan. In the course of doing my homework, I found Customego and this great forum. I've seen some fantastic Romulan Commanders here and instead of reinventing the wheel I thought I'd ask how you guys did it (or, ideally, who sells custom Romulan clothes).

I'd basically just like to add the red sash and red pants to the existing figure, then top it off with black boots and black gloves. I have time, I have money, and if necessary I have a wife who's on board and knows how to sew.

    Anyone have any ideas?

I think that the red sash texture looks like burlap so I bought a small section of red burlap from a fabric store and I think it looks great.
I have used black boots from doc mego @ http://www.doctormego.com and black gloves you can either get "glove" hands from Doc or other sources like Classic TV Toys - Home
to swap the hands that the figure currently has or simply paint the hands black for a tight fitting glove look.
The red pants is a little tougher and I have tried different fabric and other ways to get a similar look. Trying to sew pants out of red burlap, or any burlap for that matter, is not a fun experience. So far I have yet to find a way to make screen accurate pants that have made feel as though I really nailed it so hopefully someone else will post up with a good suggestion for those.

Capt. Kirk: "Is there anyone on this ship, who even remotely, looks like Satan?"
Mr. Spock: "I am not aware of anyone who fits that description, Captain"
Capt. Kirk: "No, Mr. Spock, I didn't think you would be"

While continuing to research this project, I thought of another question-- can I cut the existing black sash off the Emce Romulan and use that silver outfit? Or do I need to invest in a seperate silver outfit from Dr. Mego or something?

I would use Doc's black sparkle Suit...and put an AJ black Turtleneck underneath.

I have one of Lord Malvolio's Romulans...check it out:

It's a matter of finding the right material or making it. Use a DM sparkle suit as Dane suggested for the top (cutting one from a Romulan just wastes a romulan and a DM suit is $5).

Lord Malvolio found some cool material just shopping around. It's not easy to find though. Hobub got tired of looking so had a member here (almightysfx) print the pattern for him on some material and he made the pants out of that. Came out great.

Thanks for the suggestions. I guess I'm going to make my second Dr. Mego order this week and start hitting up fabric stores. I think I'll need to get to know this forum a little better before I start asking other folks for favors like printing onto fabric...

I thought of another one, is there any source for a mego-scale Romulan/Klingon distruptor?

I think I found the answer to my own question regarding a good disruptor. The Playmates version of Gowron the Klingon seen here:

              http://toysheik.com/images/dscn2148.jpg

comes with a disruptor that is too big for him and therefore just about right for a Mego Romulan.

Is this the pants pattern that the experts would recommend, or is there another one?

I haven't had much luck with this thread but hey, no harm in trying again, right?

I'm curious if anyone knows how I can achieve the black stitching and fringe at the bottom of the sash, as pictured here: http://www.megomuseum.com/custom/len...rr/romulan.jpg

                Any ideas?

PM Hobub. That's Lennie Starr's user name. He's good people and I'm sure he'll be able to tell you what he used to accomplish that fringe.

That is lace they sell at the fabric store on spools. They looked at me funny when I told them I only needed a couple inches of it.
