Resin question...please read and help.

I have a resin recast of the DareDevil Full size BOWEN statue. I don't know who recast it, but the problem is one of the legs does not line up with the hole in the base where the peg goes in......so what I need to know is can I heat up the resin and make the peg fit into the base, or do I need someone who works with resin to fix this......also any idea who can paint if for me (airbrush) and make it look like the original Bowen statue?

Hmm. You can heat up resin but heat it too high and you may chemically destabilize it, which can be not so pleasant. Resin can burn, so if you do try it I'd say boil some water and hold his legs in there to see what you get.

Really it looks like a mold problem to me. Your other option of course is to grind down one of the two foot pegs (whichever pose you like him in better) and fill that hole with model putty/two part epoxy like magic sculpt or something.

That's a great solution! I would probably center the guy and cut out new holes for the pegs of his feet to slip in with a dremel...and fill the other holes with Apoxie.

I'd just cut the hole slightly bigger and fill in the gaps but if the leg itself is bent then use boiling water to soften it up and re-position it.
I've made hundreds of resin kits over the years and that is the best way to sort out any problems.

I know it's a daft question but are you sure that the base is the right way round? It might just be the pic's but try spinning it 180 degrees.

Once it sets polyurethane resin isn't pliable; so heating it probably won't do any good. I'd file off one of the pins, putty up the corresponding hole in the base and take it from there. It's probably not worth the trouble making them line up.

^^ It's always been pliable for me when heated up And I've done it lots of times.

I have not, however, tried it on a resin cast this size. You could try to heat for a few moments and then try and bend it.

I like the idea of leaving it alone and drilling new holes and filling in the old ones.

I can tell from the pics that recast is polyester resin. Different animal. You could set it on fire and you still wouldn't move the leg. Should've bought an original instead of a recast. You wouldn't had this problem.

Hi Bob, I'm just curious - how might one tell the difference between polyester and polyurethane resins by photo? Granted, I've only worked extensively with polyurethane, but depending on the mold material, prep quality and whether the caster used a pressure pot you could see vast differences in skin quality, and with all the different pigmented resins you can also end up with a wide range of color tints and opacity. What's the give-away?

there is a wide range of resins. if you do not know what resin was used in the recast, than DON"T use heat.
Different resins respond to heat differently, it may sofften the material
but make britttle when cool, it may sofften and split when you move the limb
heating resin is best done when its in a matrix, of materials like carbon fiber,
nylon frabric, or Kevlar etc...
the legs "WARP" because it was taken out of the mold to soon, your best bet is do what was stated abave.

Thank you all.....I will go with cutting off the peg and filling in the original hole.....This was given to me at no cost, but I don't want to ruin it with the heating idea.......still need a great artist to paint it....any idea who that artist might be????

From the pics it's easy to see that the recast is not a pure white. It has a milky/marble look to it. AND alot of recasters use polyester to cast with. Because it's just about the cheapest stuff to use. Also the most toxic and brittle.
