The only dumb question is the one that's not asked.

Brands can and do make a difference. The cheapo stuff from Michael's and Hobby Lobby is pretty good, but the pigmentation is weak. This means you'll have to use many, many coats most likely. The best route is to buy the colors you'll use most there in larger tubes/bottles and get supplement colors through Games Workshop. GW paints are clearly more vivid and spread much smoother.

Also, do not go cheap on brushes. Soft, sable brushes can cost around ten dollars or so in various sizes, but will provide much better layering and will last a long time. And, always keep your brush wet when applying the large areas. DIp it in water after every few applications to keep everything moist.

You are required to show us pics of the final work. It's Mego Museum law I think.

I also recommend the brush cleaner solution. I can't live without that now. Better than water to clean your brushes.

I use those paints and brushes too. Sounds like I could use some of that brushcleaner too.

I use Dawn to clean my brushes as it works better than any commercial product I have tried. And I try to keep paint out of the ferrules (like mix with a stick, rather than a brush)
