Anyone used Playmates yet for customs?

I'm looking into maybe getting a 9" female Playmates figure for a Mego custom. Anyone done that yet? What's the head like compared to a Mego and is it possible to transplant a female Playmates head on a female Mego neck?

the head/neck isn't the same as mego, its a plug type like the Playmates male heads. No hand, waist or foot articulation. They basically suck. If you need a 9 inch body, Famous Covers is better, even though the arms are a bit long.

Well, maybe with a shrink it would be ok, you's still have to monkey with the neck to get it to work on a Mego.

The playmates are a "big 9 inch" they are a lot bigger that the exclusive premiere stuff

I think you MIGHT be able to get away with it. The Female Mego neck post is similar to the Playmates post. THAT head is very small for Playmates and the Mego female heads are big anyway. I used the Playmates Talosian for my Talosian on a 6 inch Breyer body and it worked fine.

Tons of the trek heads on my site are playmates shrinks. Most need to be shrunk but there are a couple female heads that were pretty close already. A couple playmates female heads were on the small side, and since Mego female heads tend to be on the large size, it is possible it will work. You'd still want to cast it and adjust the neck to it works.

none of the Playmates I've stolen heads from has a similiar head to Mego. Male or female. its sort of the opposite of mego, a male plug on the body molded to the chest and a female hole in the neck of the head.

The female Playmates heads look fine on Mego bodies in terms of scale. I tried a Uhura a few weeks ago and it looked and fit great on a female Mego body, just had to carve out the receiving inside neck hole on the head.

The only (and BIG) problem I saw was the remaining outer neck sculpt on the Playmates head is larger than the visible skinny neck piece on the Mego body. Looked slightly 'bobble-headish'. Unless you use something to cover the neck, you'll see what I mean.

As mentioned, Dave Mc has LOTS of cool, ready to use heads.

I DO love that you can use the equipment from both the smaller 3" and the 9" line with the Mego figures. I haven't yet purchased the Spock with the Vulcan harp, but I did get the Environmental suit and having all those nice black tricorders and phaser rifles ROCK.

Here is a picture of three Mego figures that I used 9" Playmates heads on:

For the Picard and Talosian, I cut part of their upper necks off the Playmates figure (along with the neck plug) and glued the neck section with plug onto the Mego 8" figure so the head height and neck look was correct. Not only that but it then allows you to turn and pose the heads as well
