    Casting a Rotocast head.....

    I have a Two-fold Question:
Does anyone know if it's possible to cast a rotocast head? I really like Emce's Khan head (hate the color) and i would like to have two cast of this head (same Mego size), and with Russ (Customlab) closing shop soon..... I'm also looking for someone to cast them for me. Please let me know who can do this for me, Money is not an issue.

Reproheads can probably do it. Black Knight has been doing some head work but I don't know if he is doing commissions, And Fred Goodspeed at Black Kryptonite does some heads but may be taking some time off. I can't speak for anyone but all those folks do great work. I know I left out a bunch of people, and there are many here who are pretty good at casting.

It's weird, but I have odd moral issues with this. I don't know why, I have no problem casting an original Mego head, or casting a head released by the big companies, but this head is a new original sculpt done by one of our own for a project by one of our own. It would seem "wrong" to me somehow for one of us to re-cast that head without permission.

We always had this silent "don't cast other customizers stuff" rule that most of us live by, and while this is actually an official toy release, it still feels like breaking that rule to me.

Guess I have no problem "stealing" from Hasbro or Mattel, but when it's one of our own, I see things different. That's not right I know, I should have the same set of playing rules regardless. *sigh* It's hard to be me!

But don't You already have permission from James, to make Casts of the one You sell on your Site?

here's an odd bit of info that may help with the idea of repainting a rotocast head. If you have worries about handling, squishing, and chipping off paint, and you dont mind a resin cast. before you repaint it you could flip it upside down and fill it with resin. I do this with some of the spare mego heads I have that I rework into new heads. nothing worse than putting in hours to rework a head with sculpy then be doing final touches after it's been baked and hold it wrong or squeeze a little too much (and it doesn't take much sometimes) and have the sculpt break/flake off. It would probably help to protect the new paint from coming off too. Just stop short of the neck plug so you can still insert it.

Dave brings up a good point, and I completely respect that. And (Almitysufx) filling a rotocast head with resin seems like a great idea, too.

I ask this, what about casting a head that one of us made, but no longer makes, or from someone who no longer makes heads? And is there a difference between an original sculpt and a marketed head that someone shrank or recast? I can totally see not selling them for profit, but only to cover materials. I suppose if you need permission, that should be easy enough. Most people are pretty cool around here, but i agree there is certainly conflict with outright bootlegging someones personal work without asking.

Sorry!! A Million pardons...Don't want to do anything of this nature without the permission of the said Creator/Customizer. And as a retired Law Enforcement officer the word "Steal" is something i truly oppose. I mean i really like the work Mr.Brady did with this Khan head....and like i stated on this thread ...just hate the color. I guess i'll just try painting the head a little lighter and probably try to purchase the Resin Khan head that Dave Mc sells. Again, Sorry for stirring the pot....just wanted to fix Khan's face color before i wrap it up for my son as a Christmas gift. AGAIN... Sorry Mego Bretherens.....and HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!!!

I agree with You, Dave and the others....I'll try re-painting the head myself. I never intended to cast this head for profit (not my style). Just wanted the khan head to have the regular Mego skin tone color to it. My 16 yr old son's favorite Star Trek villian is Khan....We just had a Lil problem with his orangy/red color to his face. I'll do the best i can...painting it with some Acrylic paint (must have it wrapped and under the tree by X-mas for him ). Thanks to everyone here for their advise on how to solve this small problem without stepp'in on anyone's shoes. Happy Holidays!!!

Frank, I'm sorry if I came off like I was accusing you of wanting to bootleg or something. Didn't really mean it like that. Just pointing out the irony of someone who shrinks and casts heads from big toy companies (me) all of a sudden getting all weird about it when the parties involved are from our own group. I think a lot of us probably feel that way. It's cool when it's a big faceless company because no one is getting hurt, but when it's one of our buddies who doesn't have deep pockets, we get all moral.

It's kind of an honor amongst thieves thing I guess. It's not right, there should be no difference whether it's Hasbro or Paul Clarke, but there is with me.
