    >So which dollar store (if a national chain) did you get this tripod from?

It was a "Dollarama;" but I'd bet you could find it at another store. I think the company that produces it supplies a few places.

I got mine at a Dollar Tree. They're the most common one in this area. I agree the toy selection has been crappy since the paint scare. I used to get some good weapons from the action figures there but not really much else. Occasionally I hit something useful.
It's not a doll it's an action figure.

....like cheap Kinder eggs!!! I needs me some more robots!!!!! The ones around here had these nifty doll stands that were perfect for 8" figures; but I think I bought all of them. They had a great selection of sponge rockets too, which I needed for a custom Mego vehicle. (I bought 40 of the small ones, and 6 big.) The ones around here also have an awesome selection of craft supplies. AND wooden furniture and chests in Mego scale.

I hit about 3 different dollar stores last week, ignoring the one closest to me thinking all they had was junk.
Well, today I decided to check out big lots to see if they had any new $3 DVDs and then thought I'd check out the dollar store by me since it's in the same plaza. It's called Dollar Tree.
Not expecting much luck, I found the gadget aisle and was shocked to find a whole ton of different-colored mini-tripods!
This thing works great and only $1.
thanks for the tip for I would never have thought to look at a dollar store for something like this.
I mean it's not anything spectacular but well, well worth the $1.
I'll probably go back and snag a couple more before they disappear as I'm sure this won't last forever and then I'll have a spare when this one breaks.

ESPECIALLY for taking pics of figures and the like.

I find lots of good stuff at the dollar store. Stuff like:

            -craft foam
-tiny beads the right size for Mego eyes
-Mego scale wooden furniture and treasure chests
-a good dub of "Arcadia of my Youth" on disk
            -Kinder eggs. (Need. More. ROBOTS!!!!)
-sponge missiles for one of my Mego projects
