    Removable vs Unremovable suit talk

We talked about this a few years ago but I thought it was time to bring up the subject once again -- to hear our newer members opinions ....

What do you think of permanently sewing your custom suit on your custom Mego ... making the suit at least partially unremovable ?

    Me,
    I couldn't do that.
It would bug me knowing the suit can't be removed in it's entirety.

Part of me would be bugged because I would think a broken limb could not be repaired without a lot of trouble ....
Another part of me would be bugged an unremovable suit is just not Mego-like.

What's your opinion on removable and unremovable suits on your customs ?

    BTW,
I don't count moulded heads with cowls/masks as an unremovable suit figure.

I like suits to be removable.

I only started customizing/kitbashing this past spring and, like you, it would bother me if I couldn't be able to remove the suit to repair broken limbs or just replace the body.

Vintage Mego items need to have removable suits...that's how they were made.

Custom items are an entirely different ballgame. If they are Mego-like, then the suits should probably be removable.

If they are Flatt-like (for lack of a better term), then it really doesn't matter. It's all in how the artist creates the figure. If he wants it to have a removable suit, great. If not, that's fine too. That's called "artistic license."

Honestly, if I pay $200-300 for a custom action figure, I'm NOT going to be doing anything with it except putting it behind glass to admire. No one is going to touch it, much less take a suit off.

Agreed...plus I'm pass the stage of undressing the dolls and swapping the heads.

The mego Knights were sort of permanently dressed, which I happen to find annoying, for exactly the reasons you mention, Kirk.
As far as customs, I started off using snaps and making them removable, but lately I have been sewing up the back. It could be undone and removed without hurting the suit. It is a little less mego like, but IMO it looks better from all angles as you inspect the figure. I don't remove the suits of customs very often unless I am re-doing it anyway. Since I don't really sell any of mine, I suppose it doesn't matter, but if someone wanted one, I would certainly leave it up to them as an option.

My opinion on this has really changed in the last few years. Initially I liked to even customize my vintage characters--tighten up the suits, sew them shut, replace belts, trim boots, etc. "Improve them."

But I've come to really like the vintage style of classic Mego; I don't think that FC or Hasbro has improved much. For my customs, I like clothing & accessories to be removable, Megoesque.

Especially when you're customizing on vintage bodies & repairs might be neccessary.

Same here. I recently picked up a set of CTVT's repros and didn't mind slicing the armor off but their excessive use of glue really ruined the chainmail bodysuits, even tearing them when the armor was removed. I can't believe that they weren't made with "snap on" armor.

Gotta be able to remove the clothes. As a 70s baby, that's what I think an action figure has. And I still play w/ my toys!

I once had this PIA customer who sent a Custom Superman back because I tacked the cape down with needle and thread to hold it in place. It wasn't removable enough for this guy. What a picky SOB!

I'll join the band wagon on the removing and fixing idear. i had a old capt. america figure where the snaps were all gone so the back of the suit was sewn up all the way and both his broke so i had to unravel the back of the suit and i now have a capt a suit sitting my parts box.

When i saw the title i thought it meant like the painted on suits like many 6" figures and below 6 inches. i am now wondering what mego figures would like if the had done that...hmmm.

When I do actually sew My own Suits...I always sew the Back up...mainly because I'm too lazy to hem both sides, and add Snaps.

I used to do customs. Years now since I did any but I would always have to do them with removable clothes.

I hate figures with clothes you can't take off. I really hated the 12" flash, Green Lantren and Aquaman (bad really bad) and I originally really wanted flash til I seen his suit was not removable.

Take em off! take em all off!...

I am all about the changeability! It's just not the same for me otherwise, sure I've sewn a few shut ( I was young and brash), but for the most part it's gotta to be strippable (if that's even a word). Heck I designed the SuperClam for the same reason, I don't like the permanence I s'pose... I guess this puts me in the "snap back" camp...
