    Painting vinyl

I'm wanting to restore some vinyl finger puppets--same stuff as a Mego head, pretty much. What kind of paint will I have the most success with? Standard acrylic?

Acrylic is the only type of paint that will stick to vinyl. Shouldn't be a problem. I would test it on a small spot first, just to play it safe.

That's what I use on Mego heads. Never had a problem.

I have heard you can also seal the head with Testor's Model Masters Lacquer finish,.. however have yet to try it.

I have found that acrylics often remain sticky forever after painting vinyl. what is the remedy for that?

Yes, I recall that from my days of painting acton figures back in the late 70s and early 80s. I think the sticky acrylic was Testors gloss but the non-sticky was Testors flat.

Testors is enamel not acrylic. They make some acrylic paint, but I would never use it on anything like a vinly mego head. Always use a true acrylic paint. I only use Liquidtex paints. Any of the cheap crap like Apple Barrel or Creama Coat will get the job done, but it still a crap paint.

I like Testors Polly Scale acrylics. What made me try them was that they actually list vinyl as one of the recommended surfaces. They flow well and are durable, and I like that I don't need to thin them. Liquitex has more colors and is cheaper, but I can never get it quite as smooth as the Polly Scale.

Just going by a faulty memory from 28 years ago.

there are a couple of acrylic paints that have vinyl in them like flashe and maimeri polycolor. They are vinyl based and stick to vinyl better. they are also matte and can be used with other acrylics...

I recommend washing the puppets with alcohol to get any residue off before painting and use a brush on acrylic sealer/varnish over your paint...
