Except for Costa Rica...Central America has gone to hell.
On the opposite side of the spectrum...Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Peru...have low murder rates (especially for Latin America)...I wanna vacation there...lol.

Costa Rica and Belize are the only "civilized" countries in Central America.

I was quite suprised the closeness in numbers between the u.k and vietnam, but then in vietnam whose counting

In Vietnam...pick-pocketing and other petty crimes occur regularly.
However, violent crimes such as armed robbery, rape, and murder are still relatively rare in Vietnam.
The murder rates in Asia tend to be lower than in Africa and Latin America.

Not sure about that part?
Here alone "Winnipeg's rate of 4.1 slayings per 100,000 residents was the highest homicide rate in 2009 among major cities. The city also placed first for robberies and vehicle thefts, and notched the third-highest rate of break-and-enters behind Regina and Saskatoon."(source provided by The Canadian Press july 20/2010)
Those are 2009 stats and the murder rate has not gone down.
But whatever they want to tell you guys so you want to vacation here?

I've been wanting to visit Central America for some time (I really need to start learning Spanish), and have been hearing very, very good things about Nicaragua. Apparently, it's nothing like most North Americans envision it and quite welcoming to expats.

I'd say that just means that Winnipeg is largely responsible for making Canada's average rate as high as it is. That article also mentions that the crime severity index has decreased in every province and territory except for Manitoba and Nunavut.

Homicide rates by city or region is not the same as for the entire country...there are obviously more dangerous cities/towns/regions than others...it all evens out.

Go to Costa Rica instead...much less poverty than Nicaragua...which means nicer hotels, cleaner towns, better beaches, superior pristine forests, higher life expectancy (79), one of the highest literacy rates in the world (94%), and no army (it was abolished in 1949)...all equates to a country a tad safer than Nicaragua (13 homicides per 100,000).
The reason Costa Rica now has 11 homicides per 100,000 is due to the recent wave of Nicaraguan immigrants (400,000–600,000)...and Costa Ricans only number 4.2 million...so that tells you something.
Skip Nicaragua...go to Costa Rica instead.

I might do that, Hector. I was looking pretty hard at Tamarindo (http://www.tamarindo.com/) a while back. Absolutely beautiful, and I even believe they have remedial surfing classes for klutzes like me. An ex girlfriend's dad is Costa Rican, and she always said it was the place to go, apart from earthquakes and volcanoes.

...and snakes...lol.
Yeah man...I have not gone to Costa Rica...but my sister has...her best friend is from Costa Rica...she says it's beautiful...she couldn't believe how green that country is...and she was pleasantly surprised how clean the towns were...people down there really take care of their place. You know...just about all the forests and animals are protected there.
She took tons of pictures...if you are interested...I might post a few later.
She also had a guide take video of her and her friends (and others) white river rafting...the boat overturned...and they almost drowned...no joke...good thing they had helmets and vests...standard procedure.
She loves Costa Rica.

If you get a chance, I'd love to see them!
About the snakes, I absolutely hate them. Where I grew up, we'd go out on the porch and our cats would be fighting rattlesnakes that were out there sunning themselves. Just thinking about how we used to run around out there through the woods barefooted gives me the willies now.

The Fer-de-lance is the deadliest snake in Costa Rica.
Here...a kid's perspective...lol...

Don't worry...I'm sure the resorts are free of them...just don't venture too deep into the forest...
P.S. I'll try to post some pictures later.

I heard that Costa Rica is becoming really popular for U.S. retirees.
