Worth noting?
Time does get by.

When I watched it the first time I blocked out the irritating parts
(mostly via JJ and young Ani) as they appeared (I was so psyched just
to be seeing a new SW movie).
I left the theatre quite exhilirated.
It didn't take long for me to realize that I had oversold the movie to myself.
Still,
I look back on the movie fondly for what I DID like about it---
Obi, Qui Gon and the whole Jedi group patrolling the galaxy,
as well as a glance at a young Palpatine/Sidious.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY EPISODE ONE!

While I agree, it's a terribly flawed movie and flawed trilogy. I actually liked the political aspects of the movie and how crafty Palpatine was in duping everyone so he could seize power in the Senate and basically turn a republic into a dictator shape — shades of Ceasar and more specifically Hitler. It's worth to point out that we should be wary of power and question its intentions. There's a lot of good stuff in it, but a lot of crap, too.
But the second trilogy is a clear lesson in being careful about what you wish for.
Mikey
May 20, '09, 10:35 AM
The first trilogy was fun for fun's sake
That why everyone loved it.
The second trilogy was totally different.
It was endless explanations and details -- powdered with what Lucas thought was a bit of the old fun formula.
It didn't work because it was made to appeal to Star Wars fans.

I hope Jar Jar and Darth Maul get their own spin-off show together.
It'll be a million laughs!
"At last, we will have our revenge of the Jedi!"
"Meesa happy to see Ani again, too!"
"We will destroy them all!"
"Meesa also happy to see nice Mr. Palpatine again!"
Sound of light saber cutting someone in half.

I was never a diehard Star Wars fan, but I was looking forward to seeing it. Took my nephew to see it and fondly remember buying cheap lightsabers and playing with him afterwards. The movie didn't hold up nearly as well as the memory. There are several things that are so right, but so much that is so wrong. Jar Jar, little Anni and his wooden acting, and Queen Amidalla/Padme's stilted dialog.

I think the average fan of the series or novels could have scripted a superior story than what Lucas came up with. He took alot for granted with the Star Wars label and has since said as much. By the time 'Sith' came around he had Spielberg helping him with the script. I think that speaks volumes for the rest.

It makes me think how little of this triliogy was plotted ahead of time and it was really all hot off the presses. They should'a had so many hints and sub-plots regarding Qui-Gon's attmpts to contact the living or at least saved his death for Ep II. They should'a inserted a ghostly Qui-Gon at the end the double-special edition of ROTJ. Instead they inserted Hayden Christensen into that ghostly dead Jedi scene. Maybe Lucas could've also inserted Carl Weathers as Chubbs Peterson, Abraham Lincoln and an alligator.

I actually felt numb on opening day after I saw THE PHANTOM MENACE. To me, it didn't quite feel like a STAR WARS film, and I felt like there was some departure from the STAR WARS formula.
Like Hector, I initially had a strong reaction to the accents of the Gungan's and Nemoidian's dialogue, feeling that they were somewhat inappropriate for STAR WARS and "borderline racist". But then I quickly realized that the use of dialects / accents was actually quite commonplace in the Original Trilogy, and none of us had an issue with them back then.
That's because the accents / dialects used were (for the most part) anglo-based.
See, in our culture, we have all become so accustomed to Anglo /european-based accents in films as being "the norm", and all other dialects / accents as having a "special use".
All Imperial characters in the OT sounded British. This was intended to audibly create an "arrogant" / "aristocratic" connotation. Was that "racist"? The Rebel Troops in the OT all sounded American. This was to create a connotation of "good". Was this shades of our own prejudice, perhaps? Other dialects / accents were used in the OT as well, with little to no reaction from fans:
The Ewoks of RETURN OF THE JEDI all spoke variations of an old Asian dialect to sound "primitive".
In A NEW HOPE, Greedo spoke a South American Incan dialect known as Cechuan because of how alien and "otherworldly" it sounded.
Lando's co-pilot in EP VI (Nein Numb) spoke an African dialect (and he even wore a funny leather hat and had large lips).
More "racism"?
Taking these things into account, I quickly came to realize that in a galaxy as huge and multi-cultured as the STAR WARS universe, there is NO dialect or accent that is "inappropriate' or "un-acceptable". That type of thinking is probably a by-product of my own "Earthly" hang-ups and prejudices.
With subsequent viewings, Episode I grew on me more and more.
There are some problems with the film, to be sure. But generally, I think it was really well-made and epic.
Happy Birthday Episode I.
When it came out on VHS, my wife bought it because she liked the fight at the end. I taped an epsiode of "Justice League" over it a couple of years later at her request.

Amen, brother.
I'll even go one step further:
I always ask folks who hate Episode I to tell me how many theatrical viewings of the film they attended.
They virtually always admit to attending more than one viewing. Occasionally, they even admit to attending more than two or three viewings!
And then, taking things yet aother step further, when you ask them if they own the film on DVD home video, a surprisingly high percentage of these folks actually do !
I'd say that's not too shabby for a movie that everyone hates.

I've only seen it once in its entirety...although I admit...I seen the Darth Maul/Qui Gon/Obi Wan lightsaber duel on cable a few times (the ONLY scene worth a damn)...although I truly HATE the back and forth editing during the duel. The other useless scenes during the duel are just plain annoying...stupid Padame compound shoot out, stupid Anakin kid vs Trade Federation station shootout, and stupid Jar Jars vs Droids shootouts, good grief, can't watch this stuff without getting irritated.
I wish Lucas would've just done a stand alone duel...with absolutely NO switching back and forth to the other annoying scenes. Just the duel, Lucas...just the duel....like this...

My feelings about Phantom Menace is it basically was the only prequel movie that emulated the spirit of the original Star Wars (though it's not better than Star Wars, of course). It was innocent fun, showing us remarkably imagined worlds and taking us for a good ride. Jar Jar was a bit annoying, but he didn't spoil the movie for me.
The die hards, the fans that have been there since 1977 or at least decades have built (with the help of Lucas and 2 followup movies, comics, books, etc) a monumental lore (just like Star Trek) on top of what was, in the beginning, simply one of the best, escapist, popcorn movies ever made. Adults could enjoy it but it *really* spoke to children. It grabbed on to the children's imagination and didn't let go.
Those children are the die hard fans of today and they wanted from the prequels something that satisfied all the lore they generated from the Star Wars universe. Lore that goes way beyond the capabilities of even the original movie.
But when Lucas made The Phantom Menace, he wanted to make a movie that did the same thing that the original did. He wanted to make a monumental, iconic film that spawned a loyal following in the younger generation first and foremost. He knew it was a losing proposition to try to make the movies to satisfy the diehards primarily. For many of them, the combination of lore, adult action embellishments and other expectations he had to satisfy them with would be a very hard equation to find.
He knew that trying to get a die hard to feel the same way they felt when they saw Star Wars at 10 years old, only it now has to be done through the sensibilities of someone 20 years older was a no win proposition, unless the die hard could remember to look at his movie through 10 year old eyes.
So, he made these movies to give the 90's kid generation an experience like the 1970's kid generation had when they saw Star Wars.
Did he succeed?
If Star Wars is still talked about 20 years from now by 20-30 somethings, you will know the prequels did their job.
I really liked TPM myself because I knew what spirit to watch it in. I liked it in my own way but what I liked more is looking around to all the preteens and almost teens in the audience and they seem to dig it.

The art form was still relatively new at the time, but for the most part, the FX in The Phantom Menace look GREAT: Pod Race Sequence, three-way Lightsaber battle, Space Battle, Coruscant... all of it CGI. The Gungan Land battle definitely looked too... CGI, though.
a plot about tax evasion
The plot was NOT about "tax evasion". It was about Senator Palpatine of Naboo (secretly Sith Lord Darth Sidious) making himself look like a hero in the eyes of the Senate as he defended his blockaded / invaded planet. When nominations for Supreme Chancellor came up, naturally the vote would go to him.
It was also an introduction to the Jedi Knights of the Old Republic and the discovery of Anakin Skywalker... very possibly the "chosen one" of Jedi prophecy.
jake loyd
Yes. Some difficult acting moments there. Some even clumsier directing by George Lucas.
dialogue
Dialogue has always been a bit corny in STAR WARS (Re: "Laugh it up fuzzball", etc.) That didn't bother me.
script
Yes, quite possibly the most elaborate and adult STAR WARS script of all the movies, dealing with politics, political plotting, metaphysics, etc.
immaculate conception
Hmmm... well, I had no issue with the idea of Anakin having an immaculate conception since STAR WARS has always tied into religious themes. But would you have been more comfortable if it had been revealed that Anakin's dad was just some slave Joe-Blow from Tatooine?
the force is a virus?
No. The Force is NOT a virus. And the prequel films did NOT explain it as such.
The Force is still (as Obi-Wan Kenobi described it) "... an energy field created by all living things..." that "... surrounds us and penetrates us..." and "... binds the galaxy together..."
But what the Prequels clarified was that ALL individuals have microscopic life forms living within them (Midi-chlorians) that serve as the person's link TO the Force. These organisms continuously "speak" to the individual, revealing the Force's "will" for them.
Individuals with a higher Midi-chlorian count have a greater sensitivity to the will of The mystical Force.
shimi
???? What's your issue with her? She was fine. DId you have an issue with Luke's Aunt Beru during A NEW HOPE? She basically served the same story function as Shmi.
the robot bad guys
Yeah. The Battle Droids were a bit corny (even for STAR WARS). They were clunky and ineffective (I guess they were supposed to be), and their preoccupation with someone named "Roger" was a bit off-putting. But the other droids throughout the film were pretty cool. I particularly liked the dangerous, fast-rolling Droidekas! Very interesting concept.
just about everything was bad about this movie
To each his own, I guess. To me, just about everything was good about this movie (with a few notable exceptions). I feel the same way about every film I really like... certainly the classic Original Trilogy.
the worst part was that it trashed the story that we loved. It basically ignored the story of Star Wars and created a lees imaginitive back story.
How? How did Episode I "trash" the classic OT story? How did it "ignore" the classic OT story?
From where I sit, the brilliance of the Prequel films was that they gave you a different perspective of the stuff you thought you knew from the Original Trilogy. The Prequels turned some OT concepts on their ear a bit without "trashing" or even contradicting them (unless you consider some of the stuff that old Kenobi said in the OT from his own "... point of view..." Clearly, that dude is a bit of a liar, liar pants on fire. :wink_y:).
If you own the 1976 novelization of STAR WARS, and if you read the prologue at the beginning of the book, Palpatine's rise to power is chronicled virtually in the same way that it was depicted in the prequel films.
In fact, it's the first and only source that names Palpatine during the OT. virtually all other references (even the classic films themselves) refer to him as simply "The Emperor".

I didn't know the emporer's name before I saw TPM but as soom as he came on screen I said "hey the emporer". I later found out Kenner had made the name commonly known 2 years earlier with the power of the force figures

now my daughter (who 13 then) never figured it out right till he is exposed in ROTS but she only saw ROTJ a couple times on video as opposed to the old man who watched them hundreds of times

I, for one, think that STAR TREK II: The Wrath of Khan is a colossal SNORE.
The film does not date well at all, and it is far too talky for its own good: "... yak, yak, yak, Spock...yak, yak, yak, Kobiashi Maru... yak, yak, yak Mr. Savik... yak, yak, yak USS Reliant... Regula One... Genesis Device"
Sheesh... I'm getting drowsy just writing that!
You may call me "mental" Hector, but I would GLADLY sit through 10 viewings of STAR WARS Episode I: The Phantom Menace than be subjected to more sleepy STAR TREK movie adventures.
This is why I LOVE the latest TREK film so much. It finally smashed FOREVER the "let's see how talky and dull we can make this latest TREK movie" formula. Interestingly enough, JJ Abrams (by his own admission) was always more of a STAR WARS fan than a TREK fan.
The result is that now TREK actually has a chance of being accessible and appealing to a wider audience. This means more success at the box office.
Yes, yes, I can hear some of you now saying "financial success is not a true measure of how good a movie is."
Whatever. But it IS a measure of how universally popular a film is.
Poo-Poo financial success all you want. The truth is, movies are a business venture with a goal of turning a profit. STAR TREK films (including ST II: TWOK) have consistently failed to do this for Paramount.
Die hard fans have consistently refused to support TREK films to make them hugely successful. Interestingly enough, this is the very same camp that refuses to support even the latest awesome TREK film.
I'm not surprised.
The exact opposite can be seen in STAR WARS fans and their support of the franchise. One needs only look at the Box office totals.
When a STAR WARS film "bombs" with the fans, it takes in an average of about 700 - 900 million (worldwide) at the box office.
When a STAR TREK film "bombs" with fans, it's lucky if it takes in $200 million worldwide (usually considerably less).

The thing about Star Trek, compared to Star Wars is that it's more flexible. One episode/movie can be an action/adventure, another can be more cerebral, and yet another can be more comedic.
The thing about the movies is the ark they started when they killed off Spock. the ark of getting Spock back up and running dominated the next two movies. Still, especially with Trek 4 they had a measure of success.
But as much as I love the original cast, there is only so much believable action/adventure you could have with a cast ready to sign up for AARP.
I think that affected the mainstream viability of the movies to a certain extent. It took a die hard fan (like me) to overlook the age of the cast (and more so, it was just that we really wanted to see our beloved cast, no matter how old they were). It makes sense to us, the future where it's hinted that turning 100 there is much the same as turning 65 would be today but it became a joke to the average moviegoer to have 60 something Shatner in a scrap with a Klingon.
I always thought Star Trek got shortchanged. First by NBC, who tossed it due to ratings a year or so before demographics started to be used (and if Demo's had been used for Star Trek, it would've been considered a huge hit).
Then, Trek was shortchanged by Paramount all throughout the 1970's by their indecision of responding to the growing Trek fandom by making a new movie or a TV show (except, of course for the animated show, which, as much as I loved it, was not an adequate way to respond to the fandom of the show). Then, Paramount get's it's kick in the arse by Star Wars to give Star Trek it's movie and Star Wars' sloppy seconds (when, if Paramount were on the ball and got Star Trek out 2-3 years earlier they would be the leader of the pack).
The Trek movie, despite it not wowing some of the fans and the public makes tons of money anyway and spawns the movie series with the cast that should've been doing movies through the 1970's instead of the 80's.
The other TV Treks came out, some of them better than others, but none were about Kirk, Spock and McCoy and that always counted against them.
That's why I am so glad to have a new Kirk, Spock and McCoy Trek that works (at least in my opinion, and it could very well have crashed and burned). And they are in a position to do a few more adventures, and I want to see them.
And I think they will be mainstream, like Star Trek was always meant to be.

I don't consider any of this "abuse"---unless of course,
you're saying something about SW/ST fans being mentally challenged
on some level and therefore easily manipulated into buying things
they don't really want
----thats' a whole other can of worms that I won't buy in to.
My thought is the more product that's satiatiing the buyer's fancy---

Oh most definitely there are a large number of Trek fans out there. The trouble is they simply do NOT come out to support their franchise like other fans of other franchises support theirs.
The painful proof is in the box office numbers.
Just look at the performances of all other big fantasy genre movie franchises... (Star Wars, Spiderman, Batman (re-boots), Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones...) all ENORMOUS performers at the box office... and in merchandising tie-ins.
Trek has NEVER performed at even close to their numbers... despite a (purportedly) HUGE world-wide fan following.
As for "marketing" performance (I'm not sure, but I think you meant merchandising), STAR TREK has performed relatively poorly there too.
TREK (movie tie-in) toys always seem to languish on shelves despite how highly-revered a Trek film may be. Even Trek movie collection sales aren't quite what they should be when compared to the sheer number of self-described Trek fans.
Do you want to know what is still one of the single highest-selling DVD movies of ALL-TIME?

I have watched the Clone Wars cartoons. And yes, I think they're amazing. But I did enjoy Episode III: Revenge of the Sith more than the animated series.
I was pretty much blown away by that film.
The first two prequel films I enjoy about as much as the Clone Wars cartoon.
I will admit however, that if certain Clone Wars animated episodes were done as live-action films, they might potentially blow away (by a country mile) the first two prequel movies... at least in my eyes.

So how come it's not the white kitty that was named "Wampa"?
You would think that's the way they should have been named, right?
Well, here's the skinny on how that went down:
The oldest, "Jedi", was given to us as a kitten back in August of 2004 by friends who knew I was a STAR WARS nut. They presented him to us already named Jedi.
Then, a few months later, during a New York blizzard, the little grey kitty (as a recently born kitten) was screaming under our window about the crappy weather. So we took him in and named him "Wampa" like the Empire snow beast.
But in the summer of 2007, Wampa ran away from home and disappeared somewhere in our neighborhood (long story). Jedi was left without his little buddy and got depressed. Wifey and I were devastated.
We went to the shelter and got Jedi a new little "girlfriend" companion. She was all white and we thought that "Leia" might be a good name (in keeping with the STAR WARS theme). But in the end, we decided on the less obvious "Oola" (Jabba's slave dancing girl).
Three months after she was all settled in with us, silly Wampa found his way back home, scratched on our window, and we welcomed him back into the fold.
Now I spend my days, nights, and weekends cleaning tumbleweeds of hairballs from around my home, and cleaning the litterboxes of three goofy cats

Now I spend my days, nights, and weekends cleaning tumbleweeds of hairballs from around my home, and cleaning the litterboxes of three goofy cats
Sounds like you got a crazy happy home!
