View Full Version : Do You Collect Barbies?

I never thought I'd ever collect Barbie and Barbie style Fashion Dolls, but the allure of the female Superheroes is too much and I started buying Barbie when she became Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Poison Ivy, Elektra, and other superheroes (Ken as Superman).
I guess I should count the 12" scale Linda Carter Wonder Woman fashion doll as well since she doesn't really fit in with my other 12" Mego Superheroes.
Even the high end Tonner Dolls are intriguing since they started making Superhero versions.

Before GI Joe was GI Joe my sister convinced my mother to buy me a Ken for Christmas. For the next 3 years until GI Joe came out I would get Ken items for Christmas and birthdays.
Funny, my sister held onto them and only let me play with them when she had her Barbies out. That's okay, because I preferred my plastic toy solders. When she finally made to give her Barbies away (she later regretted it) I scooped my Ken out. She gave away the outfits, but I've since bought replacements.

My gf is into the whole Barbie scene. The Bob Mackey's are among some of her favorites of her collection. I have bought her a lot of Barbies that make up her collection today. I do like some of the super hero Barbies as they are pretty cool.

Yeah, The prices use to be up pretty good on them. Some of them are still doing well price wise. It really depends on the doll and the collector's desire I suppose. I am glad to know that I am not the only one out there dropping a little change on Barbies.

My sister had them. No idea what became of them after she passed away. My guess would be her husband sold them.

My wife does. She has almost as many Barbies as I have super hero toys. It keeps me from having to live with the stigma when I want own the super hero Barbies.
Hey Werewolf, she specializes in the Halloween Barbies too. Cool subset to collect, but don't you wish they'd give the Witch theme a rest? How about a female vampire or something?

I have to confess last week I picked up a Spiderman 3 themed Bratz. She's not even dressed like a Superhero, she's just wearing a shirt and jeans with Spiderman on it. I had picked one up for my niece hoping that it was something she could relate to since she only wants to wear clothes with Superheroes on them. The Spiderman Head shaped clear plastic blister looked too cool, so I grabbed one for myself.
Somehow I feel like I've crossed a line.

I started getting them for my daughter when she was young - Holiday Barbie, NASCAR, Star Trek, Wonder Woman ... Then one day she just grew out fo them and I haven't bought one since (she's 15 now). Although the DC Heroes always catch my eye.

My Mom was a hardcore Barbie collector. When she died in 2000 I promised I would buy one every year in memory of her and until my daughter was born. My daughter was born in 2006 and now Loves plays and watches Barbie. I myself can't pass up the Superhero Barbies. I'm also trying to get the Elvis Aloha from hawaii doll that mattel made awhile back..........

I have a few of the super hero ones ... and the misc. one here and there... My aunt has tons and tons of them MIB ... all in my garage ... I know she has a few worth some big bucks. But most look like just the common special edition ones from over the past 10 or 15 years

I own a really nice boxed Wonder Woman (the one with the cape) but it's for my daughter. She's still in that stage of completely mangling her barbies, so i'll likely have it for a while.

i think the mod style late 1960-75'ish barbies are cool but i doubt i'll ever collect them. my aunt used to have a thin price guide on barbies. interesting read.

That is a good idea. You may also want to consider picking one up on Evil Bay loose for your daughter to play with (mangle) for now anyway. She will appreciate the fact that you kept the Wonder Woman boxed for her in many years to come. Especially once she realizes the value of collectibles some day.

Are Barbies stamped with 1966 on them worth anything at all these days? I seem to find a fair amount of these from time to time. Mostly nude though. Other wise good shape. My gf collects mainly boxed high end Barbies. I do find these stamped with 1966 some times during my collecting journeys so I give them to her. She in turn is planning on doing some customs of her own with these loose dolls some day. Should I go ahead and tell her to proceed with her customs or should I have her save them for later?

Yeah, when we bought the high brow one, we also bought the bendy armed one for $20 so she still got a wonderwoman. That poor thing is well loved.

I think many, many Barbies were stamped that way for years, and maybe still are. That's they year that particular body was trademarked. So a 1966 body could have been from a 1993 doll. My wife can verify later.

yeah they almost all have that 1966 on the body up until they chance the body style to the one they use now ... I think the heads have the real copyright of what year they came out on the back of them under the hair line.

I got some for my daughter. She has all of the Hollywood Legends Wizard of Oz, the newer pink label Wizard of Oz, and all of the SuperGals ones from a few years ago. I also get her and Birthday and holiday one every year.

That is kind of what I had thought to. Some of these even look old as well so that it what kind of throws me about these. I will be sure to pass the info along to my gf. Thanks for your input! :cool_y:

Thanks! I will let my gf know that and perhaps we will look at them together later to see if we can find anything more specific on the necks.

Most Barbies 1970s on up are not worth a whole lot even MIB and like it has already been mentioned, the markings on the back of the doll is the copywrite date of the mold and not the manufacturing date. Lol, that caused me no end of frustration at shows trying to explain to dealers why that loose beat up Barbie they had was in fact not from the 60s or worth a small fortune.
I'd also like to add the date on the back of the head means very little as well. For example, the beloved 70s Superstar head mold was still in use well into the 90s and the recent Ponytail Barbie reissue is marked 1958 on the back of her head.
Anyhoo, buy Barbies because you like them because the after market is pretty much dead.

Thanks! I kind of figured as much on the Barbie being a dead market so to speak. When Mattel made the statement that they could circle the Earth "X" amount of times with all of the Barbies they made one has to question how rare could these really be? My gf still likes to collect them because they are "pretty". :smiley1: Ohh well, What ever makes her happy. At least she is leaving me and my Mego's alone when she is collecting her Barbies. Plus I get bonus points for finding her Barbies so it is not a total loss.
On another note back in the day when I use to seriously run the stores at all hours of the day and night looking for stuff I had picked up the first Harley Barbie when it first came out. I usually do not flip stuff when I buy it. However, a collector knew that I had it and wanted it really bad. (This was before my gf started collecting Barbie) I think that I gave like $50.00 for it new at Toys R US and sold it for $700.00 at the time. I think they were going for a grand at peak during that time. Not a bad little profit just for picking up a doll in my regular every day journeys looking for the good stuff. I am not sure what it is worth these days. The last that I looked the value had decreased. No big suprise there. Grant it that finds like that does not happen on a daily basis. Especially as it pertains to Barbies. So that would be a rare exception of the case.

I have that same first edition Harley Barbie. Nice doll but you'd be lucky to get the original shelf price for it now. Once the insane amount of speculators the Barbie hobby had moved on, the artificially over inflated after market collapsed.

Isn't it just amazing what speculators can do to artificially adjust the market value from up to down and vice versa? Same things goes with the stock market as well. It is just like a game of musical chairs. All that really matters is who is left standing in the end when the music stops. :smiley1:
