Unusual Way To Sign A Book

I was at a local thrift store today and found a copy of "Apollo 13". It is a retitled book originally called "Lost Moon", so it is not really considered a first edition.

The inside had a sticker in it with what looked like "Jan Larry" autograph on it. I was thinking this is who owned the book or was a present. I didn't get it and when I got home, I looked it up. Both of his books that are signed have this sticker in it with his signature (the ones I found on eBay).

I going back tomorrow to get it.

Here is a picture of one on eBay with the sticker. The sticker in the book I found didn't have the book's name, but is the exact same size and has the black line border all the way around.

I was just wondering why they did this.

I didn't realize how many signed books you can find at thrift stores. There are a bunch. I have been on a signed book kick here lately.

Not really much value in them. I did find a signed 1st edition of John Grissom's "The Firm". It was $7 but I told the estate company about it because she was nice enough to let me look two days before the show since I had to work the day of the show. Plus I have made $1000's off this company all ready. That book was worth about $150.

I would think the people buying the book would want to get it signed in person, but I guess that makes sense.

Lovell's a tough signer I understand, and will only sign copies of his book anymore.

I've also found a couple of those sticker autos in books- Alan Shepherd & Colin Powell, both from rummage sales.

I think in many cases the stickers are done that way in books that are part of a promotional tour- in your case probably from the movie release. Perhaps as a gift or memento from a company management meeting or retreat where the person was a guest speaker but did not have time to individually meet a few hundred people. The stickered books would be handed out in gift packages to each person after the dinner or meeting. I had that happen a few years back with Mr. Hockey Gordie Howe who gave us all a signed biography but only had time to pass through and shake about 400 hands after his speech.

I have a signed copy of a collector's guide that is basically a sticker. It's not like this person is famous or anything.

The only thing I could thing of is that it was written by two people and rather than pay for one of the author's to show up and sign a stack of books or send the pile of books to one house and then another; they just handled it with stickers.

Not that I paid any premium for it but I thought it was a bit tasteless.

By coincidence, today at a thrift shop I found a first edition of the book "Time Present, Time Past" by basketball legend & Senator Bill Bradley. It had a signed sticker plate from the publisher on the inside cover. Happily, I paid my $1.99 for the autographed book.

I didn't get a chance to go back and get it. I don't think it will go anywhere. i will grab it Monday.

A nice find, that book is a great read as well.
