Not in the traditional sense as I think at one time it denoted your religious practices but in the whole "this is something outside the mainstream", well maybe.

Ten or Twenty years ago, I'd have said yes but now with companies catering towards collectors, people I know asking me to get them things, I'd say it's starting to be less uncommon.

Yes every 3rd full moon I sacrifice a virgin Barbie doll to the might god of plastic

for sure toy collecting is much more common ... I started in 1991 with Star Wars ... I met maybe 3 people who were into toy collecting ... (not counting the million hot wheels collectors that were around even back then)

now I meet someone who collects some kind of toy line just about every time I go to walmart j

dictionary.com:

5. a) Obsessive, especially faddish, devotion to or veneration for a person,
principle, or thing.
b) The object of such devotion.
6. An exclusive group of persons sharing an esoteric, usually artistic or
intellectual interest.

....depends on how you interpret those^^

Even so, personally, I think "toy collecting" is too broad a term
to be considered a certain cult.

"Mego collecting" on the other hand...

A cult? Nah we're not a cult. Now where did I put that bucket of goat's blood?

I think it's gone beyond a cult thing into a more mainstream hobby. There are at least 3 other people in my office building who have substantial action figure collections on their shelves. These include 2 professors (1 male, 1 female) and an admin guy. There are about a dozen others who have 1-3 toys of some kind in their work area.

I guess one thing that cults and toy collecting have in common. There are always others that think you are crazy.

Right, but how many of them post hourly on internet boards about the toys on their desk?

There are still lot's of people who think it's strange but baseball cards that's ok. I find it odd what's ok to collect and what isn't. It's more acceptable but still considered different.

Most can't understand keeping a toy that has value. I'm sure you all hear this, I WOULD SELL IT! Why don't you sell it??

so true ... I dabble in card collecting ... but when all is said and done... toys have more childhood memories of playing, toys display better.

Oh so many times I have heard the why don't you sell it... and most of the time it's from someone who has a collection of something else of their own... so I just ask them the same question back lol lol lol

>I find it odd what's ok to collect and what isn't.

It's okay if it's worth money. Most folks really got exposed to "collectors" during the late 80's comic book specualtor boom; and they got it in their heads that monetary value is the only true measure of a collectible's worth. Ironic, since collectibles are a really bad investment.

>so I just ask them the same question back

That usually does it. "So; why do you have all those stupid toys?"

"I dunno, what's the deal with all that Nascar crap?"

or:

"So, how much have you spent on all that stuff?"

"I dunno, probably about half what you spend on booze every weekend."

'course, when you're blessed with MY looks this one works too:

"I can't believe how full of this weird stuff your house is!"

"So.... when exactly was it that you got tired of living?"

Well.... for me it doesn't; but it's no worse. Sort of the same thing really, which is why I like to use it as my talking point.

Have you been speaking to my wife? She seriously doesn't get it. Then again, she isn't one for nostalgia so the childhood memories that are always discussed on these boards mean nothing to her.

i know friends who would waste $400 at the casino gambling and drinking but don't understand why someone would spend the same amount at a toy show and have something to show for it atlease.

A "Cult," no; I think we just have a stricter focus on what kind of "stuff" we surround ourselves with.

The mindset of having a lot of "stuff" is fascinating.

That's so true.....I knew someone who spent $150 dollars on a Bottle of some drink. He then tried to goof me because I spent almost the same amount on a figure....I reminded him that he ****ed out that drink which he may have had maybe to Glasses of because he shared it with his freeloader friends.
While my figure still sits happily in my collection.

I like to think of ourselves as historians collecting artifacts from an era long since gone. All generations do it. Collecting is our way of staying connected with our past.
