Dick Tracy would be good. Mandrake the magician also comes to mind.

Maybe some of those real old west heros like Kit Carson or one of those old time space heros from the 50s. Tom Corbit Radar men on the moon, Space Ranger type deal.

What about just old time TV charecters like Capt Kangaroo, Bozo. What about some old time horror hosts?????

Seeker

Funny How Mandrake just popped into my head its been ages since I read the comic. So After I posted here I googled it. Ya know theres a movie in progress for Mandrake. Criss Angel from mind freak is doing it.

Digging a little deeper it seems Mandrake is credited as one of the first costumed super heros predating superman and the Phantom. Guess they based him on a real magician Leon Mandrake

Sorry? Put your sorries in a sack mister... Nobody likes this game more than me:silly:

Kolchak is a natch for several reasons: Very 70's pop culture, one main central character, Moonstone publishes a comic every month.... It's a horror/pop culture/TV combo and NEVER been done before... Not too mention it's relatively simple in design and easy to produce. Having said all that, we still have several thousand reasons to weigh before making a decision (BTW they are mostly green and all have a little picture of George Washington on them:smiley3:)...

Input from you guys is always appreciated and it's just fun to think about figures we'd all like to see... So by all means let's hear it! Like Lionel Ritchie... I can play this all night long..:silly:

True, BUT, I am not sure many kids bought Capt Action or Phantom. I wonder if Dave knows the answer to this. Perhaps on the Castaway site where a person orders there could be a small questionare where you can get certain info which would help to esablish a buying pattern. They could be optional to fill out of course.

I can tell you without much doubt in my mind, kids do not buy our figures. Now, some clever parents might buy them for their kids, but lets be real these are collectible figures of niche characters, most of which are unheard of by anyone younger than 35-40. That's ok... We know who we are selling to, we hold no illusions about it. As mainstream at Star Trek is I would venture to bet that even Doc's figures so rarely end up in kids hands, that they don't even blip the radar screen.

The point is simply; that's ok. We don't need them to be a kids toy to produce them. Nothing would make me happier, if they were, but they are not. This doesn't mean they can't be, it just means they are not right now... We get closer everyday we sell them to adults... The truth is, if we sell 10,000 figures we are ecstatic, if a toy line aimed at kids sells 10,000 units it's marginal at best...

We sell Pop culture and nostalgia using toys, as our vehicle; Big toy companies sell kids toys using popular culture and current themes as their vehicle....

I love the idea of continuing with the retro heroes. As others have said, Flash Gordon, Mandrake, etc.

Are there comic book heroes, who's license would be easy to obtain? Characters from Charlton or other small publishers, like E-Man.

My wish list:

Battle of the Planets characters. (...and start with Jason/Joe, not Ken/Mark!)
Classic Speed Racer
Captain Video (for my dad!)
Ultraman

If Phantom proves popular, I'd think Solomon Kane might be a winner as well.

Some nice, classic supplementary characters would be nice, to go with our other sets:
A nice classic "Doctor VanHelsing" would be nice, with vampire hunting gear.
A "Mad Scientist" with a while lab coat, maybe with alternative 'crazy' and 'sinister' heads.

Think you could get a license for the Geico Caveman? Geico would probably buy a huge stock of 'em from you for their own purposes....

Zorro would be fantastic!

Also, if an actor (or an actor's estate) would approve a sculpt, figures could be produced for customizers as a base. For example, a batman license is cost prohibitive, but maybe an Adam West license is not. George Reeves, Charleton Heston, john wayne....could all be customized into their characters by people who buy them. Whaddya think?

I wish SOMEONE would do Jonny Quest. But while I like retro-Mego stuff, it isn't the most detailed/authentic style of action figure. I would probably hope for 12 inch versions of Quest, ideally. But as long as someone did them, it'd be cool.

I like this idea allot... But estates are no dummies themselves. We approached Vincent Price a few years ago and they wanted $80 grand:terror:
to make a figure... and I thought he was scarier alive! I have also heard that the "Waynes" are notoriously hard to work with likeness wise. But it is a good venue to pursue, even if on a smaller scale like a San Diego/NY Comicon exclusive 3-day scale. We have one or two we'd like to go after in this same vein, so this could be a very good possibility for us...

If I were lucky enough to be asked to design the packaging for ANY of these characters, I would be massively stoked. On top of my list for purely selfish reasons would be:
1. Lone Ranger and Tonto (I could die and go to heaven based on getting to officially draw the Masked Rider of the Plains).
2. Zorro (only slightly behind the Ranger in utter coolness)
3. Flash Gordon. Savior of the Universe!
4. Any of the HB heroes.
5. Monsters! Why not. We need more monsters.
6. Kolchak. Honestly, I think of him more as Ralphie's "Old Man" but it would be great to try and capture McGavin's likeness.

The others are all great as well, but these pop to the top of my list at the moment.

I would kill for a Kolchak figure. I have been tempted to make one from one of NECA's Christmas Story Old Man figures. A retro Mego style figure would be great, and I would buy it in a second, I think I would rather have a version that fit in with my more modern horror figures, whether 7" or 12". I could see Amok Time adding him to their 12" lineup. They are doing some truly great classic monster things over there. Their upcoming Blacula is AMAZING.

People have been mentioning Kolchak simply so they can make A Christmas Story Old Man Figure. Why not take it one step further and make a line of A Christmas Story figures? That movie is on about a billion times during the holiday season, you could make a boatload on it. Plus, you could use your Mego WOZ figures to re-enact the waiting for Santa scene.

Other lines I'd like to see? Well, I don't know how well those Monty Python figures sold, but I'd like to see some other figures kind of along the same movie lines.

I second this. Maybe Castaway can create their own Hulk-like muscle body and female body and gear, clothing for both.

Character wise, since they're on a King Features kick:
1) Flash Gordon - Flash, Dale, Zarkov, Ming
2) Dick Tracy - Dick, Flattop and/or any other villains
3) Mandrake and Lothar

I also hear they are considering a new Dark Shadows movie.

Johnny depp has purchased the rights to do a Dark Shadows film. Everyone I know who knows my love of Dark Shadows (who is not under the spell, or too young to remember) has been asking me about the old show, borrowing or watching tapes with me. It would also be a natural for a sort of star trek type animated series, then the figures could look like those characters.
If they had done this in the mego era extra costumes from different time periods could have been done. Playsets too! How about something called "menacing monsters!" with all the teenage monsters, wolfman frankenstein etc.

It just hit me.... Lost in Space in MEGO scale. One space suit does all the men, and could be used for a generic space suit for customs (1966 Mr. Freeze anyone?). Then, using the same heads there could be variants with the first and second season costumes.

This is also high on our list as well... Jason and I both have daughters and I really would like them to have some female figures to play with as well. We want something interchangeable and customizable IE. chesty and not so chesty. I would say Volks/Dollkin meets Mego... Having said that, lets keep in mind that's a huge undertaking both in manufacturing and financing. A license with a central female character would really make it worth wild... So it is on our list of things we want to do FO SHO!

A good female body W/Great articulation would be a fantastic addition to Castawaytoys library. Volks/Dollkin dolls have "Multo" articulation, good choice. However, My daughter and i have always been huge fans of "Cy Girls" by Takara BBi. Something about this figure that screams "Supergirl" to me. :yeah:

I guess DC would put the kibosh on the Danger Girl series- and I'd love to see a Lady BlackHawk figure, statue, bust, anything!

I was thinking about introducing a thread comparing Obitsu female bodies to vintage Megos, or Doc's new females.

The closest the Obitsu line has is a 21cm female body, whereas vintage and Doc's bodies are 20.32 cm.

Has anyone else ever gotte a hold of one? It might be interesting to compare the two.

OK, now I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned the blatantly obvious choice:

GILLIGAN'S ISLAND

Castaway...get it? Gilligan's Island characters are known as the castaways.
Get the Professor & Mary-Ann (& Ginger if you can get her off her high-horse) to promote the line on TV shows & ComicCon. It's not like they have anything else to do. Fantasy Island & Love Boat haven't been on for years! :wink_y:

LOL!!!

OK where were you guys when I post a myriad of " Gilligan's Island requests for the guys at CTVT?

Why I think Gilligan is awesome I don't think it right for Castaway... oddly enough.

Certainly CTVT would have been better served had they tried to make that line rather than the Brady Bunch.....

Licensing is tough however.

I vote for I Dream of Jeannie, and Bewitched.

Mego lost the license for the former, and they never even bothered with the latter, as a Samantha Stevens doll would have been nothing more than a retooled Dinah mite, and a different wardrobe.

Jeannie would have been different, due to the harem outfit, the pony tail, and the fact that her head could bob back and forth.

To tell the truth, I kind of preferred Jeannie over Sam, as Sam was more concerned with keeping her neurotic hubby from having a nervous breakdown than she was in being her own person.

Jeannie was a jealous, possessive, mischievous otherworldly being who got her 'Master' into trouble all the time, and then cleaned up afterward.

Ok, I know I'm new but I do have some ideas for the next wave of Castaway figures.....or what I would call my wish list.

I would love to see a Green Hornet and Kato....the variant could be the Hornet from the 30's-40's with the full face mask and the Kato with the Googles instead of the mask.

The new Captain Action over at Moonstone....who picked up the name and different uniform from his now dead father (the original Captain Action)... to make him just a retooled suit....Still the same hat and boots. Add some Castaway gloves and different jumpsuit and small C/A symbol on the side of the chest and Hero Head and PRESTO! New Modern Captain Action.

Mandrake! I know not a huge following but a great character none the less! Variant or Early Bird could be like what Electric Tiki did with thier Statue release. Regular in Black suit and Variant in Blue suit.

I know alot of people don't think he would be a great character, or he wouldn't sell....but I still cast a vote for The Shadow. Beside he would know what lurks in the hearts of all your other Mego's!

How about a relanch of the Action Jackson line.....still my all time favorite line in the Mego Universe.

Last one...or make that two.....get ahold of Mike Baron and Steve Rude and do a NEXUS and Badger. Love these Characters! They would make amazing Mego Type figures!

Okay....done with my wish list.

Take Care!

That'd be nice!

Just make the arms a little bit bigger.

The ones on the vintage Mego's were like sticks. I had a hard time believing that they were superheros!

Female action figures can be buff without losing any of their femininity.

Look at CoolGirls, CYGirls, and other Japanese dolls.

Their arms aren't like teeny little sticks that snap in two.

I totally agree. The vintage figures and even the great ones from Doc Mego are too small and stick-like for proper female superheros.

JediJaida
Feb 15, '09, 2:18 PM
The trick would be to make them buff without making them bulky.

A woman's skeletal structure is a bit finer than that of a man, and you have to take that into account.

I'm not talking about the women that have bulked up to the point where they have lost their boobs, and look like men in bikinis.

I'm talking about women who are well-toned, without the arm wattle that so many of us unfortunately get.

Lucy Lawless springs to mind. Her upper arms were nicely toned without being overdone.

Linda Carter's were good too. No flab anywhere.

Maybe a build like a gymnast or martial arts practictioner (did I spell that right?)

I'm going to take a look at Women's Fitness Magazine, and see if there are any good pics that I can use for reference; so that people will know what I mean.

Get them in all their make-up eras in four pack sets... original, Destroyer, Dynasty, etc. The original four members plus exclusive or short packed members like Eric Carr and Vinnie Vincent. Reading some of the recent posts about Ideals super queens made me think of this thread.

I am sure some females have been suggested. How about a revisit of the super queen concept combined with secret id/alter ego?

A good female armature with the secret ID costume would be a great. If someone wanted to customize the figure with a superhero costume after purchase, then there you go. Or they could be displayed along side the hero costumed Mego counterparts. A nice tie in to the CA world as it were. I am sure there are a few CA collectors out there who also have Ideals queens on the shelf, so this is a similar concept on the 8" scale.

have a good time
