SMDM figures arrive! Thoughts, modifications, what I like, what I don't...

First off, these figures are awesome! I do have some issues with them, and did make some modifications, but in the end, they are damn cool.

    STEVE

When I got this figure, I admit I wasn't that impressed. But then I took him out of the package, spent some bionic time with him, made a couple small modifications, mad him better, if not stronger and faster, and now really dig him.

The GOOD - LOVE the clear bionic limbs, the painted on shorts, and his jogging suit is nicely tailored and fits excellent.

The BAD - I did NOT like how his shirt isn't open in the front. He looked too constricted. My brother saw him and said he looked like a nerd, lol. Hey, nothing wrong with nerds, but I don't think nerd, when I hear Steve Austin, haha. His head is slightly over sized, but this is a small complaint. One of my clear legs has a big cluster of air bubbles right in the middle, which is rather unsightly. Another minor nitpick, I am not big on the painted on socks. I wish they had just given him real socks. Other than the air bubbles, none of this is really BAD.

The HEAD SCULPT - A lot of head sculpt complaints going on, and though I don't think it is the greatest likeness, it certainly isn't nearly as bad as people have been making it out. I can see Steve in there, and the more I look at it, the better I like it. And if I keep my vintage glasses on, and compare him to vintage Mego and Mego like figures, it definitely works.

MODIFICATIONS - I had to cut the shirt open a bit, and I think it looks much better now. I can't for the life of me figure out why it wasn't made like this in the first place. I had some little fabric Kenner stickers left over from when I made my SMDM custom, so had to throw one on. I really think it adds to the figure and vintage feel of it.

    BIGFOOT

I was more excited about a Mego style Bionic Bigfoot than ANY other Mego Throwback to date! He looks awesome on the card, but once I pulled him off, it was the opposite of Steve. I was a bit disappointed....but in the end, he is pretty much a winner.

The GOOD - AWESOME head sculpt! The ONLY thing I would have done differently is make him look a little meaner, but I really can't say anything bad about it, and the paint job is awesome as well. The fur suit is well made.

The BAD - I pulled this guy out, and he was like a blow fish in a teddy bear outfit. His suit has WAY too much stuffing in it, and sorry, but it looked ridiculous. I like the way they extended his legs, but they should have done the same with his arms. They look too stubby. The usage of a Hulk torso with regular limbs sounds like a good idea, but regular limbs were never meant to work with Hulk torsos, and it shows. Real hard to get a decent pose out of him and keep him standing in a pose, and his shoulders sink into the torso holes too much. He is also strung extremely tight. Last complaint, is that one of the feet on mine has a mangled rivet job. It stays on, but was really loose.

MODIFICATIONS - First thing I did was remove all of the stuffing in the suit. I don't see why they thought they even needed this. With the Hulk torso and the already bulky suit, he pretty much looks just right without it. Once I pulled that out, I took in the suit a little bit around his waist. I really wish I could lengthen the arms, but then the arms of the suit would be too short. But with my modifications to the suit, and the right pose, they do look better.

FINAL THOUGHTS - After all my modifications, I am really happy with these. They only thing I still don't like are Bigfoot's stubby arms. One other thing that would have been cool is hands on Bigfoot that could hold things, so he could beat the hell out of Steve with a tree trunk.

It is always easier to point out the bad, than the good on figures. But I tried to be honest here. I am not bashing these figures. I think they are way cool, and can be even cooler with a bit of easy work. It is beyond awesome to be getting Mego style SMDM figures in 2012. And lets face it, if I were 5 years old in 1977, these would be some of the best figures around!

So THANK YOU BBP! Keep bringing us the best licensed Mego Throwbacks around!

A few minor modifications have greatly improved the look of both figures. Nice job.

I was thinking the same thing about the padding. Was also thinking that I may try to insert some sink washers or something in the shoulder socket to push the small arms out a little bit more so they don't look so stumpy. There seems to be a bit of play in the length of the sleeves on my figure. I don't think I could get away with putting actual Hulk/Brock arms on him and refiguring the hands, but I do think pushing the shoulders out a bit more at the joint might help.

Also - agreed that the bands are VERY tight. The metal connectors on the shoulder joints are also a very thin wire. With that much tension, some of these big furballs may be losing their limbs if they get into a fight with Steve. I took the bands out of mine and restrung him with a single elastic.

That's a good idea for the shoulders, I might just have to try that.

A tip for those that might be thinking of removing the stuffing. You don't have to cut the pouches holding the stuffing all the way out. Just cut slits in them, and you can pull the stuffing out. This way, if you decide you want the padding back in, or don't want to remove all the padding, you can just slide it back in, and sew it up, or just leave the slits without sewing and it would probably work/look just fine as well.

Note: His belly padding pouch is only connected at the sides of his suit. So it could sit in the back just as well as front of the inside of the suit. After you remove the padding, move the pouch to the back of the suit. This looks better IMO.

I like your mods. I switched jumpsuits on mine, but opening up the front make a big improvement.

Good idea for the shoulders, I agree!
Maybe put Doc Mego's swivel biceps arms on him then.
They are a bit longer than Doc's original arms. Same goes for Castaways swivel bicep arms.

I thought of this too. Steve has swivel biceps, and they should have used them for Bigfoot also.

Nice, my Steve's leg just fell off. Apparently Bigfoot isn't the only one too tightly stung. One of the metal hooks ripped right through one of the rubber bands. Barely had him 24 hours. Be careful folks!

Wow,what a difference those look great with the mods you did.I think the padding in Bigfoot was added to make up for the skinny arms and legs? But yours looks much better without it.I will be doing your mods with mine too. Thanks for the pics.

I really like your modifications. I think your Steve Austin looks better than the old Kenner figure.

I've had a couple of mishaps with the DM bodies and the arm joint/tight band thing. I have made it a habit to just restring my figures when I get them now. I think you could just unfold the band and use it, but I like to string 'em up T1 style.

Well, there is no padding in the arms and legs. Just the chest and stomach.

Glad you guys dig the mods.
