I remember buying tons of soccer figures at KB Toys for $1 a piece. If you look at the first SLU price guide, the soccer figures were the highest priced figures of them all!
I made sure to keep a level head when I collected them. Some stores around the area were nice enough to place them on the shelf and it was first come, first served (employees were not allowed to buy them). I would buy a Drew Bledsoe rookie for example, take it to a show and trade it for an older Redskins figure that I wanted so I really never had a lot of money in the collection.
I remember going to a convention (I believe it was 1995 when they had the Montana convention figure). You were allowed to buy 10 figures at $10 a piece. I would buy 10, walk into the convention and a dealer would immediately offer me $50 per figure so I would sell them all but one and enjoy the rest of the convention knowing I had my entire trip paid for.
By contrast, my neighbor was a complete hoarder of SLU figures. He would have 10 to 20 of some figures and never ever would make fair trades (he would always want something better in exchange even if he had 20 of the same figure. He acted like a bit of a quasi-dealer.
We ended up moving before the whole SLU market crashed but based on what I saw was in his collection which was multiples of everything, he must have had $40-$50,000 tied up in the collection.

the 12" jerry rice looks very much like him! i was fortunate enough to get mine autographed by rice when he came by my work place. he was shocked to see the doll of all places in a cell phone store.he was very cool about it and even asked if we had more of these stashed somewhere in the back.

I got me a whole shelf of 49ers SLUs (Including an 89 Young, which is one of the only 89 Youngs I've ever seen), but I collect them loose. I'm still looking for a 12" Steve Young so I can put the gold pants on my 12" Jerry Rice, who came with the white uni, which I always hated.he was very cool about it and even asked if we had more of these stashed somewhere in the back.

I was a big time collector back in the early 90's. My next door neighbor at the time also used to collect them big time (this guy dropped thousands of $ on them and even had some prototype figures).
Finally, in the late 90's before Ebay really took off, I decided to part with most of my collection and only keep what I wanted (I placed an ad in Tuff Stuff and made a good amount of money).
I still have some figures and picked up my Holy Grail figure a year or so ago which was a 1989 Cal Ripken (one of the most valuable of the whole collection). I remember he was selling for $400+ at its height and the book value might have been higher. I bought a mint on blister for $80...unbelievable.Leave a comment:
