I like the stuff from '91,the ones that came with the coin. At the time I thought "That's neat. Just like the Star Wars figures."Leave a comment:

I have only one that I know of - The 12 inch figure of Troy Aikman. To look at it you would think Hasbro made it. Complete cloth outfit, including removable helmet. Pretty cool.Leave a comment:

yeah it's been like that for a while where only a few will always be worth something, but the rest are crap
I remember getting the nascar ones for $1 at the dollar store and turning around and exchanging them at walmart for $8 a piece and toys r us and getting the football ones.Guess it was an even trade after allnone are worth crap

I should pay attention a bit more to the soccer figures, find out who are the most collectible ones. I still see these loose in box lots of figures and happy meal toys. Like Adam West said, they were giving them away at KB Toys and also in places like DollarTree for a buck apiece.
Sadly, I can't see a future where SLUs go up in value again, at least not to the extent of their prior glories. Maybe some of the key rookies will stay up, but I think there are just too many "MOC" figures in sealed plastic boxes, packed away in collections. Go to any baseball card shop and you'll still see a wall full at top guide price.Leave a comment:

I was mainly baseball, looking for the Braves, who were hard to find around here. I did get some football like Marino, Montana, Elway, etc. I know I still have the football helmet sets for the NFC and the AFC.Leave a comment:

I remember buying tons of soccer figures at KB Toys for $1 a piece. If you look at the first SLU price guide, the soccer figures were the highest priced figures of them all!
I made sure to keep a level head when I collected them. Some stores around the area were nice enough to place them on the shelf and it was first come, first served (employees were not allowed to buy them). I would buy a Drew Bledsoe rookie for example, take it to a show and trade it for an older Redskins figure that I wanted so I really never had a lot of money in the collection.
I remember going to a convention (I believe it was 1995 when they had the Montana convention figure). You were allowed to buy 10 figures at $10 a piece. I would buy 10, walk into the convention and a dealer would immediately offer me $50 per figure so I would sell them all but one and enjoy the rest of the convention knowing I had my entire trip paid for.
By contrast, my neighbor was a complete hoarder of SLU figures. He would have 10 to 20 of some figures and never ever would make fair trades (he would always want something better in exchange even if he had 20 of the same figure. He acted like a bit of a quasi-dealer.
We ended up moving before the whole SLU market crashed but based on what I saw was in his collection which was multiples of everything, he must have had $40-$50,000 tied up in the collection.servs him right
I actually found a bag of the soccer figures loose like a year ago for like $3,they look cool.Just not for me,I'll post him here when I find them for a soccer fan or somethingLeave a comment:
