Here's the kicker. I know what they're called, just not how to spell it!
A friend of mine had them. It was a series of girders and polyhedral connectors that could be assembled into a variety of geometric shapes, then there were plates that would snap in, making solid shapes/flat surfaces.
Here's where it gets REALLY cool.
Some of the plates had studs on top, making them Lego compatible!
The toy was called Ranbegon, or some variation. I know little to nothing about it, and have found nobody else who remembers them......despite them being used in the 1980s revival Gumby show.
