    1974 Collegeville Costume Catalog

When it came to Halloween costumes, the two biggest names in the 70's were Ben Cooper and Collegeville. If one didn't have a specific license, the other surely did.

In the mid seventies, Ben Cooper had a lock on some prosperous licenses namely The Universal Monsters and Superheroes from DC and Marvel houses.

This left Collegeville with some interesting choices and a great deal of "imitation brand" characters. Concentrating on cartoon characters and popular toy brands, Collegeville has a real mix of fun knock off costumes that would be fun to collect.
While looking through this catalog, I was shocked to discover that much of my trick or treating involved Collegeville. It must have had a lot to do with my proximity to a Woolco.

I think I may have had that cat mask in the tiny tots section; not the costume, just the mask. My mom has never really been into Halloween, so in Kindergarten I got a cat mask and a Slinky (so began my gifts on Halloween to make up for the lack of Trick Or Treating). When I went to Kindergarten on Halloween, and all the other kids (including my cousin) had costumes, I felt so left out.

I just love "Tiger" and "Stripe". Charles Schultz's lawyers probably did too!

The Phantom and the Shadow? Man, that is too sweet. That Shadow mask is actually well done!

Yeah but the question begs, why? There seemed to be a mini revival of Shadow merch in the early 70s but how many kids knew the character?

Gotta love them. I used to collect Superhero Halloween costumes back in the 90's when you could still buy the costume and plastic mask off the rack (they had stopped coming in boxes). But they took up too much space at the time and I sold them all.

Never knew about half the ones Collegeville sold.

I did a quick search on ebay and it was surpriseing how many of these costumes were on there, most of which were pretty cheap. I did see Godzilla, which looked cool and Captain Action, which was just a little out of my price range

These would be so easy to get back into collecting.

Yeah, and a lot of older folks may have known the Shadow from radio, but never knew what he was supposed to look like, having never read the pulps. My dad didn't recognize the slouch hat, scarf and big nose when I showed it to him at some point in the 80s, even though he raved about the old radio show.

I have a green version of the Spider, just the mask. I was never into the body suit as a kid, so I would never keep them. I also had the Popeye and the Bugs Bunny.
                      It's all good!

My cousin went as "The Spider" one year. Every time I see that Steve Miller album, it takes me back.

Thanks for the link, it brought back a lot of fond memories. I used to have that CASPER THE FRIENDLY GHOST costume & somewhere I have a photo of me wearing it, ha ha! I'll have to try to dig that up.
