Trying to remember a vintage toy line

I remember having a smaller than normal size coloring type book that featured strange and odd looking creature characters. I seem to remember the pages being more on the brownish side like they were created from news print type paper. I also remember coloring in a couple of the pictures with a magic marker and being upset that I chose to use a magic marker as of course the marker went through the paper to the other side ruining the other pictures. The closest thing I can find that might have been the toys these drawings you could color would have been based on in this small coloring book was something like the Upsy Downsy characters. I don't think this was it though but my mind just can't seem to remember enough and wrap around what these toys featured in this coloring book were. I have been bugged by remnants of remembering these bits and pieces for so long now that it is really getting annoying. If I try and think harder and try and remember more all I get is a bad headache. I am thinking this came out in the late 60's or early 70's, the toys and the coloring book but again my mind is pretty vague on it. Maybe a coloring book even came with each toy character. Sorry but thats the best I can do
Capt. Kirk: "Is there anyone on this ship, who even remotely, looks like Satan?"
Mr. Spock: "I am not aware of anyone who fits that description, Captain"
Capt. Kirk: "No, Mr. Spock, I didn't think you would be"
