    >That really was just a throw away line meant to throw the viewer off track a little bit...

I always thought it was there to weird things up too. It probaly got blown up. They DID have bombs that could destroy a planet, as we found out in the second; so I don't think this is too much of a stretch.

    >I loathe the Burton remake the way Zira loathes bananas!

I didn't like it 'cos they made a POINT of sucking out all the depth. Caesar was a bad guy 'cos he was a bad guy. Zaius wasn't actually a bad guy (as you discover at the end of the original) just someone going to extremes to protect what he loves. (That is, his entire society.) In the new one the hot ape chick falls for the hero 'cos that's what always happens. In the original Zira comments on how "damned ugly" Taylor was. (And is happily married; which never happens to the female lead in films any more...)

What made the original such a nifty film WASN'T the effcts, it was all the IDEAS.

We need a new Rod Serling....

    Don C.

Yeah cause wasn't there also a bit about not seeing the stars either? Maybe it was overcast?

^ ^ Okay, sure, but they were out there for three days (which we know because they had food and water enough for that duration, and they were almost out when they arrived at the waterfall/cornfields). There would be a crescent visible after the first night. Not to make too much of this, but I tend to think this was a line from the early process of the script development, before Serling decided to write the Statue of Liberty into the ending, thus making it Earth. But then again it could be radiation shielding or some such Marvel-No-Prize type of explanation.

That really was just a throw away line meant to throw the viewer off track a little bit... But, if you're looking for some type of explanation, then you can just assume that it was "new moon" when they were out wandering in the Forbidden Zone...

The only things Burton's version had going for it was the special effects & the score/soundtrack had good elements.
It's a shame that that version is what will come to mind when someone of the younger generation hears or thinks of POTA........unless they are properly educated

That would throw the apes for a loop, if you showed up at Ape City with some Mego Ape action figures! "Dr. Zaius... would an ape make an ape doll... with a human body??" *flings Dr. Zaius figure into Dr. Zaius' hands*

I loathe the Burton remake the way Zira loathes bananas! This thread is about the 1968 film, and anyone who brings up the 2000 version again will be forcibly placed into a space capsule and rocketed to the year 3078!!!!!

I'd guess your saner than most. The movie gives you so much to think about.

It will always rank as the greatest movie ever for me.

The new movie..? Saw bits of it, too trendy.. The original 1968 movie, the first sequel, and the '74 television series, now those were the best of the lot. Just wrote a great review about the television series DVD set. Surprisingly entertaining, thanks much to Roddy and Mark Leonard.

It needed that Rod Serling touch...it tried and failed.

It also needed a Jerry Goldsmith type soundtrack...it tried and failed.

And it also need a hero that you actually cared about...

    So sad...It could've been great

I can't say enough about the Planet of the Apes movie, the 1968 version. It is such a classic. The costumes rocked. The cinematography was incredible. The acting superb. The cast was stellar.
