new flash gordon movie might be a sequel to the 1980 film

^Yes. All of this. Although the temptation to render some of the worlds of Mongo with CGI could be pretty hard to resist. But the art deco look would be so, so cool.

I agree with a reboot with Lucas and Spielberg. Wasnt Spielberg who Lucas originally wanted to do the Star Wars sequels to begin with? Some competition with Lucas' creation would probably do them both good. I think both are life long Gordon fans anyway.

I would like to see them go back to the source material and have a 1940s art deco style future look to it.

How about old fashion special effects? Have no CGI or computers at all in the film. It would really stand out now and would be against some of the stuff the two created over the last three decades.

Max IS Ming, and Brian is a must. He grew up on Flash and you can see how much fun he is having in the scenes.

Actually I would not want to see Ming as the villain, but rather one of the other Mongo bad guys (girls?) and just a hint of Ming in the background with maybe something at the end that makes you scream............................................ ..................

It's that kind of direction that would be ideal for Flash Gordon. It wouldn't be a character study of Flash's deep motivations and emotional response to his situation. It would be a pulpy, fun, lighthearted, visual romp. Lucas would be perfect for the job.

George Lucas.

He is an amazingly creative person with a fantastic imagination. But directing is reportedly not his strongest point. I believe there is a long running joke among the original cast that his direction amounted to telling them "Faster, more intense." It still would be cool to have him involved in a Flash Gordon movie. Like a Spielberg and Lucas team up.

I have that CD too. It's fantastic. Blake is also the composer who wrote the score to The Snowman ("Walking in the Air") cartoon, and Amityville 3-D. In fact, I was just listening to this CD this morning, reflecting on this thread. Blake's score is really moody in parts, with echos of John Barry mixed in with more traditional genre serial stylings. It's a super fun disc. I really want Queen to release a dialogue free version of their score too.

I got to thinking... this would be a tough act to follow. It's truly unknown how much of the camp was totally intentional. I think Dino wanted his own Star Wars, and Lorenzo Semple Jr. wanted to give it the same campy vibe Batman enjoyed.

Both of them are gone now, so how do you do it... try to mimic the first? I would not want to be the guy tasked with that.

Flash Gordon needs a proper reboot, and I'll tell you the perfect guy to helm it.

It makes perfect sense. He originally wanted to do Flash Gordon. Now that SW is out of his hands, I would love to see George bring us the worlds of Mongo to life. Given a retro art deco production design, and it could be unlike anything we've ever seen. And I think Lucas could feel free to play without worry of fan reaction.

If you can't tell, I'm not a Lucas Hater. I happen to think he's a genius, despite some flaws in his recent films.

What I didn't know until recently, is that the original soundtrack (not used in the film) had several themes which got the "Queen" treatment and were then used on the final version.
This soundtrack has been released now, and it's a shame the composer (Howard Blake) didn't even get a credit for some good tracks which I thought were Queen originals.
I'm a big fan of Queen, but that just wasn't right...

Blake was the composer for the orchestral sections, but the rock compositions are Queen's.

However, Blake did get screwed, but not by Queen...blame the producers of Flash Gordon.

Even without Freddie...the filmmakers should try to get Queen again...I'll be content with Adam Lambert singing...as long as I get to hear that famous Brian May guitar riff...that would rule.

I'll certainly go see it when it comes out, but I'm pretty firm in believing that original movie is a time piece that can't be duplicated. Hopefully it will bring it's own merits and not just try to mimic the original.
