Did anyone watch this? I don't have cable. I want to get the DVD if it is out.

It certainly is complete (mostly) and the added footage does give a slightly different flavor to the story. The down part is that the newly added footage isn't of the same quality as the rest

I think I saw a silent BW version in film school. Then they mentioned the one with the modern soundtrack by Queen I think and I saw it later.

Before that one of my Junior College Professors had said the new Batman (1989) drew heavily from Metropolis.

Anyway, it's a legend.

If you are are worried about how to watch it, this is something that caught my attention. You can clearly see a tribute to Metropolis in Batman (1989) and I think the Matrix and some others come to mind.

Watch it for those scenes. See how many scenes you see in Metropolis that were duplicated somewhere else, because Metropolis was first.

And that may be fun and keep you interested. You will see stuff in there that got used in 50's Sci-Fi, 60's TV, etc, etc. I have not done it, but it may be cool to make a list.

But besides that, it is on an epic scale and it is a good movie. But it was a Silent BW movie originally so you may have issues. Silent BW movies used to scare me as a kid.

It takes a while to get into the mood of a silent movie, and a long one at that.
Sometimes I see it as an exercise in motion picture archaelogy. I try to look beyond the OTT acting and high drama, and look at the beautiful sets and costumes. I also try to put myself in the shoes of the people of the 20s, who saw this for the first time. Movies had just started in those days, and suddenly you get all this magic, with special effects, a robot,...
That must have been quite a thrill.
And it's not an action movie (though there's plenty of excitement), but social comment on exploitation of the working class. In that respect, SF again proved to be a trailblazer, criticizing society without going for the in-your-face approach. It's risky, too, if you remember the quite erotic dancing scenes with Birgit Helm. Later in life, she distanced herself from the movie, claiming it "wasn't her at all"....

Great movie, and again, I'll have to upgrade my DVD. Hopefully for the last time....

So you get a city from the future, a robot, a mad scientist, disaster scenes, barely-clad women dancing, a movie with a message,...
Have I sold everyone on this movie now? Yes?

This is one of those movies that I've always wanted to see but have never had the opportunity. I'm afraid it will probably not live up to all the hype in my mind once I finally get the chance. Plus silent movies tend to bore me after a little while. I hope I'm wrong because it looks like a cool movie and I've heard such praise for it but 2001: A Space Odyssey is also considered a classic and I can't keep my eyes open for that snore-fest.

Metropolis takes me back to Film Studies courses at University. The first version I saw was a faded black and white that had done the Art House circuit for too long. No musical sound track, of course. When the "Moroder Version" came out it was nice to see a visually restored version but the soundtrack was disappointing. I haven't seen the later version with a restored original score.

I will make an effort to see this more complete version.

As far as restored movies, I remember seeing Abel Ganz's Napoleon that had been restored by Coppola's American Zoetrope. It was visually stunning and the score was really impressive.

I'll just wait another ten years, when they've discovered another extra hour of footage, where you see Rotwang perm his hair....

The movie is a landmark, a true classic, though.
Seen it at least ten times.
Last time, it was in a museum here in Gent, where they've built a "replica" of an old movie theatre, where they show only classic movies.
Wonderful experience!

this last 25 mins was found in a museum that claimed to always have the footage but no one bothered to fish it out until about 3 years ago.

This then leaves roughly 4-6 mins missing until it is truly 100% complete

That's great news! I have the last version that was released. I think they played it on TCM a few times.

As do I. I love it. Every year or so, there is a group of toy robot collectors that gather in Adamstown, PA for the BotStock convention--small group of folks who are major collectors of mostly vintage robots and ray guns. While I collect all kinds of SF toys (not just robots) I attend it every year.

At the closing dinner two years ago, a local steak house played Metropolis on the TVs for us. I don't think anyone else in the restaurant knew what the heck it was!

D'uh I should read more carefully... I saw the original for the first time only a few weeks ago.
