A lot of you guys keep getting stuck in Nostalgia world...like The Bat said...the original was great for its day but it's now so outdated...yes...it warranted a remake...and about time too.

You nostalgic folks stay home...more movie theater seats (and popcorn) for me.

I like Keanu Reeves...I watch all His movies. Plus...while the original was great...watching it now, it looks pretty dated...and I LOVE Today's Special Effects.

    It was!!!

    You make a point, though.

I've never felt like a bad remake of a good movie was a threat. A waste of time and money, maybe. If the original holds up, well, it is still a good movie no matter how bad the remake is.

I think it is generally accepted that remakes are roundly considered inferior, but I can't think of one instance where it kept me from checking it out, if I was truly interested.

I'm giving this one a very clear "no, thank you".
I'm fed up with remakes, that usually just steal the name of the pic for publicity, then throw in a ton of unneeded CGI, and completely change all characters and events.

War of the worlds? Yes, let's change the whole story, all characters, go from Victorian England to modern day US, and use Cruise, who we all know IS from another planet...
Hellblazer? A typically British character with a very distinct look? Let's change the setting to the US, and the only thing you leave of the main character is that he smokes too much...

That would be like having Captain America played by-wildly exaggerated guess-Will Smith!
Now wait a minute, that might just be happening....

I'm still waiting for someone to film The Alamo with lesbian Austrians on the one side, and tapdancing Moroccans on the other side, using only laserguns and cans of Campbell soup to fight with. Let's pitch this to Emmerich and Devlin (Godzilla 98 anyone?).

And the final insult to Day the earth stood still: Keanu-I have one facial expression-Reeves.
    "Woaw, dude!"

    That worked perfectly in Speed.
And then it didn't work anymore....

    I'll give it a chance.

The three biggies for me are War of the Worlds, The Day the Earth Stood Still, and When Worlds Collide.

Two have been remade and there has been talk for years that When Worlds Collide is in the offing. I don't mind taking in the remakes, but I don't believe any of them will ever top the original and I'm okay with that. If one does....well, that's a bonus!

    >Wonder how it will work without the COld War paranoia?

The point of the old one was that humans wage needless war, and their technology is advancing to the point they could threaten the rest of the universe. Since we haven't licked that whole war problem I think the moral holds up perfectly well.

Provided that's the moral of the NEW one.

Wonder how it will work without the COld War paranoia? Maybe they substitute terrorism paranoia for it?
