I think it really depends on your child. I was thinking maybe some Goosebumps episodes would be a good starting point.
My youngest watched Jaws when he was 6 and loved it. I really didn't want to play it for him but my wife thought it would be ok.
I really haven't gone up the scale from there. Even though he wasn't scared by Jaws, he does have a vivid imagination and is morbidly scared of going to our rec. room in the basement by himself and will even take some of his action figures and turn them so their faces are not looking at him before he goes to bed.

7 years old? I'm old school, so I'd probably be scared to show someone that young anything much worse than Abbott and Costello versus any one of the Universal Monsters. I saw Jaws when I was 10 or so and I still have trouble swimming in ocean water I can't see more than 10 yards ahead of me.Leave a comment:

My kids are 4 and 2. They love monkeys and dinosaurs.
We watch the new King Kong movie with the sound off.Leave a comment:

The Blob is a very good choice. Forgot about that one.Leave a comment:

I think I would have chosen a B&W cheesy B movie. Something w/ creatures like Tarantula or The Blob. Something that looks fake, but suspenseful enough to a 7-yr.-old to have the desired effect, that probably won't induce nightmares.Leave a comment:

How about Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds"? Does that constitute a horror film? There's only one gory part...Leave a comment:

Loved the Day I put on the original Kong on the projector for the kids....1 minute into getting munchies for them in the kitchen screams of "Dad, somethings wrong with the projector!" came from the living room...of course it was in black and white and they thought the colour had gone....lol
Did the Universal monsters with them then the Hammer movies ..then moved up to Halloween....hardly any blood...but one scary suspense filled movie.Leave a comment:

I recently watched "Creature from the Black Lagoon" and really loved it! The underwater filming is amazing and the fact that it mostly takes place on that lagoon makes for a nice scary setting.Leave a comment:

Excellent choice.I enjoyed poltergeist as well. When my daughter reached the age of scary movie watching(wanting).I educated her with Romero's original B & W night of the living dead. She has been a zombie hound ever since...movies , comics , board games...
So be very careful of what you unleash...LOL and congrats my wife hates scary movies as well.My daughter and I watch them whenever we get a chance.
I will be going with the universal classics with my son.Leave a comment:

I couldn't agree any more.I think you picked out a good one! I absolutely hate blood and gore (I'm very squeamish!
) And I enjoyed watching Poltergeist. I just wish more scary movies were being made that didn't rely heavily on the gross stuff so I could enjoy being scared instead of being nauseated by it...Leave a comment:

Something Wicked This Way Comes would be a good entry level horror movie. Or any of the Universal Horror Classics. Poltergeist may be a bit much for my 6-year old, but your mileage varies.

lmao!! that beach scene in Saving Private Ryan is one of the scariest things I've ever seenHow about Saving Private Ryan. Oh wait, thats all blood and gore, sorry. Maybe The Omen (1st run) or Children of the Corn. Can't remember if they were particularly gory, but they scared the hell out of me, when I was younger. Also, M. Knight Shamalamadingdongs movies are kind of scary, with that whole 'whats hiding around the corner' thing. Just a thought. ...
