I won't say that I HATE the actors I'm about to mention.
I reserve "hatred" for killers, rapists, terrorists, cynics, and people who hurt little animals.
As far as actors are concerned, I really dislike the work of Christopher Walken, Jeff Goldblum, and Nick Cage.
You see, I really feel that masterful acting is an invisible art form (just like really good editing).
When you watch the best actors, they draw you into what they are doing without using gimicks or tricks. They just present a moment in a way that is supremely legitimate and emotionally logical. Marlon Brando comes to mind.
The openning scene of The Godfather is a beautiful example of an understated performance that draws the viewer in. The set design and lighting worked in tandem with Brando's performance to create an understated menace in the character of Vito Corleone. Just the way Brando sometimes used to mumble his dialogue was a way he drew in the viewer.
The cast from the 1979 film "Alien" were all also very good at this type of understated performance.
With Nick Cage, Jeff Goldblum, and certainly with Chris Walken, I always feel like I'm watching a performance. "Look at my acting!! Look at my acting!!"
I find it jarring, distracting, and it effectively pulls me OUT of the drama everytime I see it.Leave a comment:

This thread is crushing the joy out of my existence. There are so many wonderful people listed that are getting so much undeserved hate. Robin Williams? I adore him unabashedly; The World According to Garp is one of the best films ever made, and his performance in it is real, funny, amazing, angry. Nick Cage? John Travolta? Keira Knightley? These are people I cherish as performers and as people. Do they really deserve this outpouring of hate, these film stars who occasionally star in bad movies that you personally dislike? The whole premise of this thread makes me cranky.
it's just a personal opinion.
Now, on another thread, I took issue with people saying things about Will Smith. But my problem there was not about posters disliking him, my problem was with one poster who said he shouldn't be in movies altogether. ***? Why shouldn't Smith be in movies? He has every right to be in movies, more so because he's a huge box office draw. The same goes for Robin Williams. I might not enjoy him...but I do certainly think he should be in movies....just like Smith.
I just don't dig on Robin Williams, I find him incredibly annoying, it's just a personal opinion.
Having said that...I happened to like some of his earlier films like Mrs Doubtfire, Awakenings, and Good Will Hunting...but others I can't stand, especially his later stuff like RV, what a horrid flick that one was.
Overall he has been decent...but I guess I get influenced by his interviews and stand up jokes, he is NOT funny...the thing is he thinks he is hilarious on anything, and he is NOT...like Toyroom/Anthony said, it's like nails on a chalkboard...yikes.Leave a comment:
