Hulk repeats curse of tanking in sophomore weekend
It is a shame it's dropped so much...because it IS a good Movie. One in which...will make it's way into My DVD Collection. Which is more than I can say for...X-Men 3, Fantastic 1 & 2, first 4 Batman Movies, Electra...
yeah I made the mistake of buying Electra on DVD before watching it

Its not actually as bad as it seems, as it did pretty well during the week, taking in between 4-6 million a day from Monday to Thursday. It should beat its production budget domestically ($150 Million) which Marvel will see as a success. The drop was pretty bad, but less than Ang Lee's, and should continue to have some legs with no superhero movies coming out for two weeks. Considering it was up against two fairly well promoted movies, and The Happening tanked even worse, all is not lost. It still got good reviews, and could be pivotal in Marvel's plans for the Avengers movie. The latest rumor I heard has Hulk as the bad guy in that movie, which makes a lot of sense, and could be a fun ride.
I think most folks aren't real discriminatory and go see everything that comes out; so most movies have really good openings that drop quickly. I don't know if folks see movies multiple times any more either; unless it's REAL popular. Probably 'cos there's always new movies to see.
After IRON MAN'S success Never in a million years would I have expected a letdown
in box office in ANY form with such a high profile MARVEL SUPERHERO movie release....weird
Meh.. it was predicted. I read this at boxofficeguru.com on Friday:
With male audiences distracted by two new laughers, and most comic fans having already come out to spend their green, The Incredible Hulk will have a steep fall ahead of it. The new incarnation is not as loathed as 2003's Hulk which crashed an alarming 70% on the sophomore weekend, but feelings are not too much warmer. A 60% decline could result giving Universal about $22M for the weekend and a ten-day cume of $97M.
And I think it's actually doing better than predicted.. hanging tough at #2. I was gratified to see Love Guru's Friday estimates below expectations. That thing is already on many critics' worst of the year list.
But what the original poster said was the truth. When I saw previews of Bruce Banner running around in South America(Where the Ang Lee movie left off) I actually thought this was a sequel not a reimagining. They should have made more of an effort to distance the two movies.
Now I'll admit I want to see this movie but I dont have the umph that I had when Iron Man came out. I saw shell head on the opening weekend.Maybe I'll take the kids to see hulk tomorrow maybe next weekend maybe when it hits the cheap shows.
Hulk repeats curse of tanking in sophomore weekend
Film drops an incredible 69% from Friday to Friday grosses with little competition in the theaters. Honestly this should come as no surprise. Many of us said after the Superbowl that Marvel had missed the boat on sufficiently advertising this film to the masses and that proved completely true. It's not like Marvel just had to tell people another Hulk film was coming out. They had to CONVINCE people it wasn't going to be the SAME Hulk as Ang Lees. They never did that. Trailers got better as the release date approached, but no one, not even diehard fans, could tell what kind of movie they were going to see. How many positive reviews were prefaced with the comment, "I went into this film with minimal expectations..."? THAT is why only FANS showed up and very few others did. Fans like us were going to give this Hulk film another chance and I for one was quite pleased with the movie.
I thought it was done well, BUT I'm a fan. Most everyone on this site is a fan or a follower in this genre. But as we all know the fan base is seldom ever enough (unless it's Star Wars). It was going to take mass appeal to turn this film into a hit and Marvel's research misled them to believe the Hulk didn't have an image problem to repair. They were wrong and that's a shame. This film deserves better, but ultimately you have to place blame on the marketing department. Warner Bros spent an entire year re-marketing Batman to the masses before Batman Begins came out and the effort paid off. The public slowly came back and embraced the new film. Now they have renewed life in the franchise. The Hulk is likely finished as a solo act and will be reduced to a supporting role in the Avengers. Bummer...
