Michael Jackson.
Yes, Prince destroys him as an intrumentalist, that's a given. I'd give the songwriting edge to Prince as well...because Michael had a large infrastructure helping him...and one of my favorite Michael songs is Man in the Mirror, a song he did not compose.
Having said that...Michael was the superior singer, waaaaaaaaaaay better dancer, and overall just the better showman.
...and as a kid, member of the Jackson 5, well, you just can't beat that.

When I listen to music (for the most part) I listen for the music and not the lyrics.
Love Beatles and Pink Floyd - which basically have no sexual innuendos whatsoever.
Sometimes I hear song a hundred times and not even know what it's about (that's why for me the music and singing voice is most important) doesn't matter what he's actually singing aboutLeave a comment:

I enjoy and respect both of them greatly. Honestly I'm a bigger Prince fan than MJ but I would never say one was "better" than the other, they were both amazing.Leave a comment:

I have no disrespect for Prince and acknowledge him as a talented artist.
The plain truth is imo Michael Jackson is a 100% better singer and his choice of songs are 100% more catchy.
One of Prince's big pop hits was Little Red Corvette.
IMO the verse part of that song was horrible (music-wise)
Chorus was fine.
But it seems like most of Princes songs are like that.
Michael Jackson on the other hand was a master at every aspect of a song.
And as far as Little Red Corvette goes, it has one of the best written opening lines ever: "I guess I should of known By the way you parked your car sideways That it wouldn't last." It tells you everything about the story in the song immediately.
And the opening line to "Bad"? "Your butt is mine." ... so, yeah.
I can easier compare little Michael to Prince bacause adult Michael was very sterile.Leave a comment:

Please! Do ya have to ask?
I have been a Michael Jackson fan almost my entire life. I was 3 when "I Want You Back" came out, and I loved him ever since. Prince is OK, and I have "1999" and a few 45s, but in our family, Michael was the greatest entertainer of all time. He had a vocal range of nearly 4 octaves. He was a fantastic dancer, b/c he studied the greats like James Brown, Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire. He took the music video industry to new heights w/ his short films. He was also the most charitable, giving celebrity ever who gave over the course of his life $350 million to charities, including his own "Heal The World" Foundation. But in comparing Michael to Prince, Michael didn't have to stoop to raunchiness to sell records. Many children went to his concerts, and even after his death, children still love him today. I have never and will never believe all the horrible things written and reported about Michael. And even though I love Shaun and David Cassidy and Rick Springfield, Michael always will be #1 to me!
Does that answer your question?Leave a comment:

^I'm something of a Weird Al Yankovic wannabe...always making up parodies of hit songs...I've done it for years. My wife loves them.
Anyway, my version of "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" goes..."Come on! Want my nose gone! Don't Stop 'Til You Cut It Off"
Some of my other hits include "Sammy Davis Eyes" featuring my impression of a cross-eyed Kim Carnes.

To me that's like comparing Neil Diamond and Neil Young, sure they have the first same name but I like both of them for different reasons.Leave a comment:

Both great - I decline to pick a winner, because I can't think of a fair way to choose a loser.
I can see the point people are making about Prince being ahead because he's a more accomplished musician, but I don't know if I can personally quantify "greatness" of an artist that same way. Elvis comes to mind as comparison to MJ. Neither were great musicians - both had something that still made them great and stand out from everyone in their cultural era.
"Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" is my favorite MJ song, and for people who doubt MJ's writing abilities please check out this home demo version of that song. This is the tape he gave Quincy Jones before the started working on "Off The Wall". It features Jermaine on bass and a very young Janet banging coke bottles.
Even if it doesn't change your mind about MJ as a song writer I think it's SOOO fun and awesome to hear that you'll get a kick out of it anyway:
