Few things get to me like the sight of Linda Blair in full Exorcist possession makeup but as usual, the most incredible makeup job Dick Smith did for that movie went practically unnoticed because it was so natural and invisible. Some people are still surprised to discover that Max Von Sydow was actually a 44 year old wearing Dick Smith's old age makeup in that movie. A makeup that had to look good in harsh sunlight in hot temputures as well as the cold of Regan's bed room.
Of course, The Exorcist is only the tip of the iceberg for this guy's career which includes The Godfather movies, Midnight Cowboy, Little Big Man (old age makeup on Dustin Hoffman), Ghost Story, Taxi Driver, Altered States, Amedaus and more.
He also inspired and mentored many more legendary makeup artists, not the least of which is Rick Baker, who was his assistant on The Exorcist.
Dick is still active with fans, going to shows and heads a makeup course.
