I had those portfolios when I was a kid. Frankly, I was a bit confused
by it all.
It took me many years to understand the link between McQuarrie's
paintings and the actual movies' designs, but once I did see that link,
I was quite impressed.
Indeed it was an early production lesson well-taught, if not exactly
well-learned.
I'm sorry to hear about his passing. I have several books containing his contributions. I'm having a hard time fighting the urge to go thru my library and look again at his artwork (and others) contained there in. Sad to say on my part, that I always had easier time remembering the other name associated with Film design artwork (Ie Meade and Cobb).
Thanks for reminding me of this great artist!
Wow that really sucks. I have The Art of Star Wars & The Art of Return of the Jedi, and his artwork in them is definitely my favorite. I also loved the fact that some of his designs got made into Star Wars figures. What a loss.
Your eyes do not deceive you. That is a Buck Rogers Starfighter but it was originally intended as a Colonial Viper:
RMQ's design for the refurbished Enterprise; Star Trek-The Motion Picture. The the movie Enterprise's design was eventually based on a painting by artist Mike Minor this looks lot like the Next Generation E designed by Andrew Probert:
So he basically worked on films till around 1993 or so. Jurrasic Park was the last one. I didnt know he had worked on all these! Wikimedia Error Heres his wiki page.
>While he will be forever known for influencing the look and style of Star Wars, McQuarrie also set the template for Battlestar Galactica and produced art for Cocoon (for which he won an Oscar), Total Recall, E.T., Masters of the Universe, Nightbreed (!?!) and Batteries Not Included.
>McQuarrie’s art also influenced the mothership in Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind and he was even called upon to illustrate that great image from Indiana’s book depicting the power of the Ark of the Covenant.
I definitely feel I owe Mr. McQuarrie a dept of gratitude, his visions as an artist have shaped millions of childhood fantasies and dreams including mine.
