I come from a postal family. My grandpa retired from the USPS along with two aunts. I currently have two other aunts and three cousins who work there. I also did my stint as a casual employee (6 months on, 6 months off, no benefits) during college. From my personal experience, the biggest problem is the postal union. As far as saving money goes, I really think they need to cut some of their management levels. From what I've seen they have a remarkable amount of bureaucracy in the organization. And considering what the average postal worker makes I can only imagine that the "higher-ups" are making more for a lot of redundancy.
If you want overtime, for example, running a second route if a sub is not available, a USPS employee has to sign up for a three month approved overtime list. However, if someone who is not on the O.T. list accidentally gets a few extra hours, let's say, due to construction or an accident on their route, the union will make sure all the people on the O.T. list get paid those same hours even if they did not work!
To put this in better perspective,...we have a large nationally known festival that runs seven days every spring. The town goes haywire with traffic and street closings. Many people in that post office sign up on the O.T. list that month because surely the non-O.T. carriers will get delayed and rack up a few hours. I was appalled when a cousin told me she made over $700 extra dollars that week for hours she did not work,...all because of the union.Leave a comment:

They actually had something similar to this in my first home which was a townhouse community. They basically had small locked boxes for everyone's mail. A couple of large boxes that were used for bigger items. They would place a key in your box which would allow you to open the big box. Once you opened the box to retrieve your package the key could not be released from the key hole.Leave a comment:

Are you nuts????

Hell no...I'd rather pay more than have to go to the bloody post office.
Easy for you to say...small town Mikey...I live in a city...lol.
Can you imagine close to half a million residents trying to get their mail personally in Oakland?
That would be even more expensive...the postal service would have to build millions and millions of postal boxes throughout the country.
Very bad suggestion...

Send me your address and I'll send you something so you don't just get "funk mail"

I would rather see them drop Saturday instead of Wed. like they were originaly talking of.Leave a comment:

For not a bit, they could actually take Friday off too. Every bill I have is paperless. The only thing I get is funk mail and the occasional package. They could shut down all together and I be fine.Leave a comment:

Funny you should mention both USPS and Netflix together.
USPS is going to suffer when Netflix drops its DVD mailing service altogether...that's gonna be a huge loss for the postal service.Leave a comment:

Postal rates are going up and up and up.
I don't want to see us lose services on top of price increases.
USPS isn't Netflix

Yes...by a mile...lol.
I tested it out one day...I went to a UPS store...and they wanted to charge me $75 to ship a painting...so I RAN to the post office...and it was under $30 there.
No comparison.Leave a comment:

No...the postal service has to do that in order to try and slash its enormous deficit...five days a week delivery is more than enough.Leave a comment:
