I've got to travel about 30 miles to go to a Denny's.

Denny's is the one we had that closed down here. Their Grand Slam Breakfasts were pretty good from what I remember, at least here.

I actually haven't been to Shoney's in quite a while.

I am fast learning that my little, itty-bitty corner of the world does not have a lot of chain restaurants that seem to be popular in other areas. There hasn't been a Big Boy around here since the 1970's and today is the first I have ever heard of Shoney's.

I don't recall whether it was on this forum or another, but last year I learned through an on-line discussion that there are actually chain donut outlets! There is nothing like that around here,....donuts come from small family bakeries.

I recall another discussion about the best fast food hamburgers and was unfamiliar with most of the chains mentioned.

Maybe hubby and I don't eat out much simply because there aren't many places here at which to eat out.

Still wonder why they pronounced it like that ?

Probably a PA thing. My best friend's father is from central PA and he always used to refer to us as yins or youins as a plural form of you. I found out that he wasn't the only one who did this from that area.

They also refer to soda as "pop" where I refer to it as soda or just generic "coke" which could be pepsi or any other brand. I love hearing the different regional differences in language.

There are 4 in my area, but they have really gone downhill. I used to love the breakfast buffet. But I don't eat there anymore cause the last couple of times I was there it was nasty. The food was bad and the place was dirty.

    I never liked Denny's

I must have went to at least 5 different ones in different states and they were all bad ...

    1. Tiny servings
    2. Waitresses were always snippy
    3. Had to wait 45 minutes for almost anything you order
    4. Usually get the order wrong
    5. In an empty place it takes the waitress 15 minutes to bring coffee and they almost throw it at the table

Everytime I ever went to any Denny's they were all like that.

I think Denny's is the absolute worst service restaurant ever

I knew a few people back in the day who pronounced it sh-shoneys

    That's not correct, right ?

This reminded me of something, a little off the subject, but has anyone ever heard that song "Welcome to the Waffle House in Georgia" which is a Weird Al type parody song based on "Hotel California"? It is eye wateringly funny. Google it or search on Youtube. The artist is Mike something, I think. He toured with the Eagles at one time.

You are correct Tim. As many as they are now, several years ago there were alot more. The main office in Nashville is to blame for the poor management. They got into the habit of only hiring white people. They would darken in the the "O" in the Shoney's letterhead if you were anything other than white. It caught up to them. Lots of Shoneys shut down after that.
