Netflix and being poor

Redboxes are everywhere and the cool thing is, you can rent at McDonalds's and return them to the one outside Wal-Mart. There is one on every corner, it seems.

here we only have them at walmarts and maybe 2 or 3 Publix supermarkets, these you can't return in the mail right?

My nephew has been renting DVD's from the "Redbox" outside his local Walmart.

He said he likes it (for new movies) better than anything.

But still not enuff to step foot back into my local Ballbuster.

I have defended "Ballbuster" on this board in the past, primarily because there was one smack dab between me and work and I could rent old movies for a buck a piece.

This March, they decided to set the price on every rental in the store to a flat $4. Meatballs 3...$4 to rent (not that I would rent it). New releases...$4. One convenient price.

There is no logic to that. It's like they want to go out of business. I'd rather get a buck for the classics (which are already paid for when it comes to the bottom line) than hold out for $4 because, "we need more revenue!!!!". Sometimes, counter-intuitive is genius when it comes to business, but the parking lot has been pretty empty since they initiated this pricing. It's fundamental...volume, in retail, is a goooood thing. Cut the price and go for volume (especially since the inventory is paid for...), don't quadruple the price and hope for the best.

I refused to rent anything till it came around full circle for me. Now every week I get new movies to me, even if they have been out for 28 days or whatever. The fist month was tough though.

yeah it sucks to walk in a store and see all these movies out that you've been dying to see and know you have to wait another month

Yea, the studios cut a new deal to increase sales and on demand, so now nexfix has about a 2 week lag on most stuff. But I've been a member for years, since they started and all you have to do is survive the install 2 week lag then your back in cycle.

The Studios are now focusing on more VOD and realize sales are decreasing but will still sell hard copies. The company I work for put in a bid to process titles from various major studios for VOD release. They basically want to bypass Netflix and other companies and be able to stream their own movies from their portals.
Does this mean Netflix will go away? Not likely since there will always be a demand for older titles and people that still want to rent. I foresee hard copies going down in demand while streaming increasing in the next decade.
When 4G is nailed down and set in place, you will be able to watch a movie on your phone as well anywhere in the world. Grant it you can stream music and movies from your Mac server library to your iPhone anywhere in the world as well. Of course you need a strong connectivity.

Back to the subject, I love netflix and the fastest way to acquire a digital library of movies, docs, music videos and live shows. I do the 3 at a time, rip and return. Encode to my taste and store in hard drives.
I can also burn to DVD-R.
Blu-Rays are another issue and we can do it at work. Rip them but not burn them...yet.
