In 1971 singer Sammy Davis Jr. starred in “Poor Devil,” a sitcom pilot about a lowly bumbling demon hoping to move up Hell’s hierarchy by claiming a few souls. To make things even weirder, it co-starred the great Christopher Lee as Satan and veteran TV actors Adam West and Madlyn Rhue. Jack Klugman played the human targeted by Sammy in the pilot which was not picked up due to a combination of bad ratings and the ire of Christian viewers. The Church of Satan was thrilled, though, and offered to make Sammy an honorary warlock. Sammy, a curious-minded fellow and spiritual seeker who had converted to Judaism as a youth, happily accepted. He maintained a friendship with church founder Anton LaVey for some time but eventually left the organization. What can I say? It was the late sixties in San Francisco. Anyway, dig that swinging sound, man. #poordevil #sammydavisjr #satan #satanism #churchofsatan #christopherlee #seventies #70s #tv #television #antonlavey".
