I too remember when the annual showing of Oz was a family event. One year we went to a relatives house to watch it because we didn't have a color tv. What a spectacular!

It was a big event in my house too as a kid ....me and my sister would watch it every year.70 years old and still going strong......A few years ago the top movie songs in history were voted on..."some where over the rainbow" came in #1 of all time.My 5 year old niece can't get enough of "OZ"....every generation gets hooked
As a foot note....when the world trade center got bombed the first time,the broadcast antenna got knocked out.....the only TV station that was still broadcasting was CBS(from the empire state building).....guess what aired that night...."the wizard of oz"

I saw the Oz DVD and Blue-Ray at Wal-mart last night. One of the extras on the DVD was the movie with John Ritter playing Braum and writting the Oz story.

I`m waiting for reviews on the Blu-ray, and if they didn`t screw it up in some way (hopefully not!), I`ll be picking that up.

I have that coming too! The original WOZ negatives (that they used for this) are less than a half hour away from me at the Eastman House.

How many remember the WOZ merchandise that came out alongside the Mego figures. The board game, coloring books, and 2 comic books. One with the movie story and another Land Of Oz comic using the movie likenesses. I had both and actually saw the Marvel/DC comic of WOZ before seeing the movie (actually, I probably saw the movie before but didn't remember it until after I got interested in the comic)

Land of Oz is long lost and the WOZ comic was in bad shape so this thread got me to skip over to ebay to see if I could find a Land Of Oz, at least. I ended up finding this with 8 minutes left.

Yes, I certainly remember the days when the Wizard of Oz was a once a year event. It was right up there with holiday shows like Rudolph, Frosty, or the Great Pumpkin. When it was advertised, you planned for it and you made sure you were home to see it because, if you missed it, that meant waiting another year.

Last Wednesday they played in theatres around the country for one showing only. I tried to take my daughter but it sold out early. I would have loved to have seen it on the big screen.

It was great when it was an "event" and you had to wait once a year for the showing.

After VHS, DVD and the multiple times it's played on cable it kind of ruined it, imo

yup, annual ritual for our family back in the day. Ya gotta remember, that's was when a lot of folks only had 3 or 4 channels anyway....which I totally miss.
It's coming out on BluRay. I saw some screenshots and I could really see stuff I never noticed before.
THe Lollipop Guild can be seen clear enough that you can make out their skull caps and makeup.

TBS/TNT shows this film to death....as they do with everything else they have the rights too....remember Beastmaster?

They still do that about 3 times a year with this film truly a timeless classic
