Because I totally think proposing in public...especially in front of a huge crowd like that...is all for self-attention and vanity. Proposing to someone you truly love should be a private affair...she probably was embarrassed like hell...besides...we obviously don't know all the details...she obviously was not prepared to accept from the beginning anyway. She probably didn't even love him...but the dude pressured her into a wall...and he deservingly paid for it.
