Your number 1 guy, as I found out just a few years ago, is a type of typical garden spider. They get much bigger than the ones you normally see in your back yard.
I do find spiders fascinating and I won't kill them. They not only eat the insects mentioned above but also wasps and hornets. I let them make their webs where they wish because of this. We found a newly hatched egg saxk in my wife's greenhouse last year. My boys loved watching them make their little parachutes and take off. We all take care of them around my house.
I take them outside when I find them in the house....unless they dangle over my face when I wake up. Then they're fair game. lol.
Spiders that I especially hate (because they're in my region)
1. They're black spiders about 3 inches across and make giant webs in uncut fields and sit in the centre of the web.
They have a yellow design on their backs --- and shake their webs when they get distubed ... I've seen some so big, they were eating grasshoppers that got caught in their webs.
2. These spiders are brown and measure about 1-2 inches across.... They make funnel shaped really thick webs (sometimes 2 feet across) in barns and cellars.
3. Not sure if they're jumping spiders, but they look like little mini tarantulas --- about 1/4 to 1/2 inch across......and they run so fast you can't see their legs moving --- they almost look like their hovering.Leave a comment:

T1K, I wish there were spiders that big here in the Bay Area. I would love to photograph some more. The largest of spiders I have seen here are less than one inch long...Leave a comment:

Hate 'em! I've found 2 black widows within the past year. One in my trash can. As I was putting my trash in the can I almost stuck my hand through it's web. The other was in a bag of top soil I was putting out in my garden.
I've also seen a lot of wolf and grass spiders too. Man, they get big and fast!Leave a comment:

Thanks, Manspider. I think spiders are beautiful. You would never think they were that hairy when you see them in person.
I also used to have a pet tarantula. I didn't know it until I bought the tarantula, but spiders are very delicate!! My pet spider didn't live beyond one year, although the pet store said they could live as long as a few years.Leave a comment:

Yeah, I have a thing about spiders because I know how poisonous they can be and I can't really distinguish the bad ones from the really bad ones. I know they all can do damage in various stages. Snakes on the other hand I have no problem with. I don't want any as a pet, but I can tell them apart. I've even caught 2 in the wild just to move them away from where people were.
If I can, I'll catch the spider if it's inside and take it out some where out of the way and let it go.Leave a comment:

Hate spiders???
Never... the spider is one of my sacred totem animals.
That means I'm surrounded by the spirit of the spider and all of its teachings.
I can't kill a spider or be in the presence of anyone harming one. I hold spiders to the highest spiritual regard.Leave a comment:

Sorry to come out in disagreement, but spiders are awesome and fascinating, and they help keep the populations of far more loathsome creatures -- flies, mosquitoes, roaches -- down. Truly, some spiders are terrifying to behold, but only a few are actually harmful, and those (black widows, brown recluses) you ususally don't see till they're on you. Appreciate their weird beauty says I. Spiders are our friends!Leave a comment:

I don't mind spiders. I pick em up by one leg and throw them out.
The only time one startled me, was when I was sitting in the bath, and one took a swan dive in the water.Leave a comment:

I love spiders.....when I know where they are.
Waking up with a 2 inch spider dangling over your face is no good. Heart attack right there. lol.
When I was little, I was terrified of them.
My kids pick them up like nothing.
I have a BIG one outside my shed right now I've been feeding.
The ones I get in my office are the biggest spiders I've ever seen, not in a museum or on a wharf.
They're cool to watch but I believe there is nothing, uglier or scarier lookng on the planet.Leave a comment:

You will notice how scared this little spider was of the great big shrieking thing that appeared before it by the fact that it never even flinched.Leave a comment:
