DC Super Hero Girls - Brand New Line

Brilliant. I can not believe it's taken this long.

"DC Super Hero Girls,” set for an initial launch in the fall of 2015, centers on these female characters during their formative years, before they discover their full super-potential. They will navigate their teen life as they uncover their abilities, nurturing their powers and mastering the fundamentals of being a hero (or villain). The first phase of the launch will focus on digital content to allow girls to explore and interact with the characters and learn their story lines.

The second phase of the “DC Super Hero Girls” roll out, beginning in 2016, will include TV specials, videos, toys, apparel and books. DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. are partnering with Mattel to launch a toy line, which includes action figures (finally!) and fashion dolls.

“Together with Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment, the ‘DC Super Hero Girls’ franchise will further expand our already powerful girls portfolio,” said Richard Dickson, president and chief operating officer of Mattel, in a release. “We know Super Hero is a culturally relevant theme and the DC Super Hero Girls franchise will engage and inspire girls, providing cues to explore heroic acts through play and into real life.”

DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. also announced they will be partnering with Random House Children’s Books to create a portfolio of books that will be complemented by a series of graphic novels from DC, as well as Lego to feature a “DC Super Hero Girls” line of building sets.

Interesting--sounds like a Monster High-style format, with the added advantage of DC tie-in publications.
WANTED: Dick Grayson SI trousers; gray AJ Mustang horse; vintage RC Batman (Bruce Wayne) head; minty Wolfman tights; mint Black Knight sword; minty Launcelot boots; Lion Rock (pale) Dracula & Mummy heads; Lion Rock Franky squared boots; Wayne Foundation blue furniture; Flash Gordon/Ming (10") unbroken holsters; CHiPs gloved arms; POTA T2 tan body; CTVT/vintage Friar Tuck robes, BBP TZ Burgess Meredith glasses.

They've had their own Disney Princesses, right under their noses this whole time, and didn't even realize it.

Sigh. My daughter is now 11. Where was this 5 years ago?

This isn't the first time they tried this (Wonder Woman and the Star Rider)but thanks to a 11 year old girl Rowen, DC finally got there act together and decided to give the girls super-heroes to play with.

Mattel is losing the Disney Princess line next year, so this may be one of their substitutes.

My daughter will flip for this! Can the folks at DC licensing please take over the comics?

And yes, Mattel is in on the bandwagon with this:

              Agreed.

However, I can see their reasoning waiting for so long before proceeding.

The thought process being "Princesses? Of course. Superheroines? Maybe." regarding girls tastes.

Have no fear. If this line does well, just like every other success outside the comic part of their media output affecting comicbook content, this too will follow suit and you'll see an increase in this tween DCU representation in printed product. That said, regardless that comicbooks are where all this got started, I'm sure in 2015 comicbooks are way down the trough as far as netting profit for WB/DC, and thus are a lesser priority to focus on overall.

I have very mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, great that they are reaching out to young girls and giving them good options for female superheroes. On the other hand, not crazy about how this continues to draw the hard line between what are "boy toys" vs. "girl toys".

I showed this to my daughter and she loved it. I already had customs Superhero dolls made with Barbie myscene dolls. So my daughter is revved up to get anything Mattel or lego dishes out.
